[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I am using the Gigabyte TR Card Rev 1.0 that is flashed with the NVM33 Designare firmware.

- I also do not have a signal till part way through the boot. Using an RX-580 will not fix this. I have a RX-590. I am not aware of anyone who can get the Apple TB Display to turn on at post with Titan Ridge. It will turn on at post with Alpine Ridge.

OK, I understand that Titan Ridge doesn't turn ATB on at POST and I'm disappointed by this :(
It makes an idea of flashing pointless until I get TB3 Display like LG 5K. Till then I can use Falcon Ridge (ThunderboltEX II) with ATB.

You've said that RX580 won't help, but in the context of Titan Ridge. Mine Falcon Ridge is able to turn ATD on at POST if it's connected to RTX 2080 Ti, not GTX 690. I tried swapping GPUs making GTX 690 main card, but no luck.

Previously I had Z97 Deluxe board with the same GPUs/TB2 AIC card and the situation was the same: no signal on POST from GTX 690. But I could get it with a tricky method: press and hold reset button for a while (2-3 secs) immediately after the very first cold-POST signal. Then the computer resets again and voila: the ATB is turned on even with GTX 690.

Unfortunately that trick does not work on my current setup, so I have to use iGPU HDMI to bypass VGA card error. It's a bit annoying because of the second display, so I think RX580 or any other supported single-GPU card would help me to get a signal at POST as it can do RTX 2080 Ti.

- I do not have a problem with USB 2.0 devices dropping after sleep.

- Brightness control is sometimes possible and sometimes not. I have not investigated why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
Well, actually I don't use sleep at all. I remember it not working in High Sierra or Mojave, so maybe things have changed.

I have not tried this myself, but the procedure would be to test different values of AudioOut in the UEFI --> Audio section. Have you tried other values besides 1?
Hi Casey,

I can confirm that Audio Out 4 works. I get the Boot up Chime via my optical/digital out. :) This should work for you too using alcid=11

Awesome!! I'll have to mention this in Quick Reference spoiler in Post #1. Good work!

EDIT: Done.

Machine still running great after 1+ year after following the guide here with all the parts etc (Thanks CaseySJ)
(Except for Bluetooth not available at various times, forcing a reboot. Fenvi-T919)
But since I use Logitech MX Keys + MX Master 3 with dongle, its not a major annoyance, except I can't use the Airpods until I reboot

Now, for the monitor I'm using the excellent 32" LG UN880 Ergo with USB-C & it works great with a single cable.
Got this from the local Costco at the link below for ~ $700 & then they accidentally dropped the price to $500 and 1 click later
refunded the $100 back. So keep an eye out for deals

1. RX580 DP out to Intel DP In (ie onboard graphics)

2. USB-C cable out to monitor. I'm using the cable LG provided in the box.

I guess this is not a Thunderbolt 3 monitor, however the manual says the USB ports on the back of the monitor should be usable if I plug in a usb stick etc, but never got that to work.

3. Lot more space on the desk.

Still on Mojave 10.14.6 for now.

Hello. I'm happy to say my build still works great with Mojave. Ive bought a second M.2, hoping to create a dual boot with windows on the new M.2. Are there any guides for this? I tried to do it once using Boootcamp, but at restart I got several NTFS(?) icons at Clover start up screen and none of them seem to work. Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Yes you can definitely copy-and-paste the existing ROM value from Clover.
Everything works fine. Is there any benefit changing from iMacPro1,1 to iMac19,1 as recommanded in the guide ? And if I change this, do I also have to change the other informations as this can be suspicious to Apple to have 2 “different” hardware with the same identification numbers.
Thanks.

Although this has been discussed several times in this thread, a summary of the pros and cons is as follows:
  • Benefits of iMac19,1
    • Most closely matches the components in this system (Coffee Lake CPU and Z390 chipset)
    • Has no T2 chip, therefore Sidecar in Catalina and Big Sur will work
  • Benefits of iMacPro1,1
    • Real iMacPro1,1 uses Xeon processors. These processors do not have iGPU, so iMacPro1,1 sends all GPU-related tasks to the AMD discrete GPU. Hence, video rendering performance and other tasks that make use of GPU compute units will, in general, perform faster
It is possible to switch by just changing the system name. This should be attempted first because it keeps the same serial number, board serial number, and other credentials. This means existing software will not need to be re-licensed. But you should check if a duplicate entry is made in iCloud (i.e. if a new computer gets registered in your iCloud Settings). If so, you can always delete the previous entry.

The safest option is to change serial number, board serial number, firmware features, ROM, System UUID, and everything else in SMBIOS. But this will cause your system to appear as a new computer. So existing software will need to be re-licensed, and a new entry will be added to your iCloud account.

On the z390 board, if you use the 2nd m2 slot I believe several sata ports get disabled. Check the bios to enabled/disable this & the manual

At the very least you should be able to hit F12 or whatever the bios key is & boot from the 2nd m2 with windows on it and isolate the issue to a bios setting or clover config.

Thanks @CaseySJ.
I had a blast (and sometimes hard times) reading this thread over several days.

Feels like the internet in 2000 ;-)
