[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hey CaseySJ! I followed this guide that you posted for OC 0.6.1. It works fantastic for 10.15.4, but it does not show boot option for macOS Big Sur. My Big Sur boots fine with clover r5123. Any tips to get the boot options showing? (I'm not sure if you posted a new guide for OC 0.6.2 or newer, I have not been able to find it).

Thank you!

Edit: Found the OC 0.6.2 guide, but still no boot option for Big Sur. Instead, I have 2 EFI boot options (one likely points to clover, and the other to an old OC on my backup drive), Time machine, my 10.15.4 Clone, my 10.15.4 Recovery, a Big Sur Installer (from the current USB) and an internet recovery. This is after having pressed spacebar to show all options. It seems that my Samsung 970 plus NVME drive (my main boot drive with Big Sur Installed) isn't showing up in OC 0.5.9 at all (I used to boot with OC, and had no issues)

Edit2: Booting the macOS Big Sur installer causes OC to crash
At the OpenCore Picker menu so you see a disk volume called Preboot?

They already are @CaseySJ
Please run IORegistryExplorer and select File --> Save As..., then post the saved file. It will give us an insight into USB configuration.

I do not. I listed all the volumes that I do in fact see in my previous post after pressing the spacebar

If you go back to the previous OpenCore version, do you see the Big Sur boot option? I trust you made a backup of it?

Also:
  • Is Big Sur installed on a separate SSD or on a separate partition on the same SSD as Catalina?
  • If Big Sur is installed on a separate SSD, does that SSD have its own EFI folder with OpenCore?
  • Or is there just one OpenCore installation -- and that installation is in the Catalina EFI partition?
  • Is Windows also installed?

My old OC installation which boots macOS Catalina is not able to see a Big Sur boot option. However, it does see an additional "MacOS Installer" option. Clicking it only shows an Apple Logo with no progress bar.

My setup is as follows:

Main Internal drives:
- 970 EVO Plus NVME with macOS Big Sur and Clover r5124
- 4TB SSD with a clone of macOS Catalina 10.15.4 and OC 0.5.9
- 2TB SSD with Windows 10 (currently, neither Clover nor OC can see or boot windows. This used to be possible for me, but I have not set this up again)

Additional Drives:
- Internal 2TB SSD formatted as ExFat for some additional data backup & windows games (no EFI)
- External 2TB SSD for Time Machine.

Flashdrives:
- 16GB with OC 0.6.2
- 32GB with OC 0.5.9
- 32GB with Clover r5124

I have not moved OC 0.6.2 to my main EFI on the 970 Evo yet, since booting through a flash drive does not work. OC 0.6.2 does successfully boot 10.15.4.

Of possible interest?
- I used to boot macOS Catalina 10.15.2 with clover (older version, unsure of which one). The Clover EFI used to boot my main nvme, my clone ssd, and Windows 10.
- I upgraded to Catalina 10.15.4, and with that moved to clover 0.5.9. At this stage, I was unable to get OC 0.6.0 to boot Catalina 10.15.4 or MacOS Big Sur, so I remained at my current settings for a few months.
- I upgraded to Clover r5123, and installed and booted Big Sur. I then upgraded to r5124 yesterday.

Try the following:
  1. Copy the Clover r5124 EFi folder to a separate USB flash disk (specifically to the EFI partition of the USB flash disk).
    • This will create a backup of the Clover EFI folder.
  2. On the 970 EVO Plus, rename the EFI folder to EFI-Clover.
    • Now the 970 EVO Plus will not be bootable (but the USB flash disk in Step 1 is bootable).
  3. Insert onlythe OpenCore USB flash disk.
    • Keep the Clover USB flash disk on the side.
  4. Boot the system with the OpenCore flash disk (F12 at BIOS splash screen and select USB disk).
  5. When OpenCore Picker appears, do you see options for both Catalina and Big Sur?
    • If so, can you boot both Catalina and Big Sur, or only Catalina, or neither?
To undo the process:
  • Remove the OpenCore USB flash disk and insert the Clover USB flash disk
  • Boot from the Clover USB flash disk (F12 at BIOS splash screen)
  • Boot into Catalina or Big Sur
  • Mount EFI partition of 970 EVO Plus and renamed EFI-Clover back to EFI

I will do that in just a minute, and let you know the results. When mounting my EFI partitions, I did notice the following two volumes, which could be causing an issue:

The VM Volume is also present on my Cloned MacOS 10.15.4. The update partition, I suspect, is leftover from updating to Big Sur. Is there a way to remove it?

Edit: I redid the OC 0.6.2 setup on a USB and renamed the EFI on my main drive. I can boot Catalina. I do not see a Big Sur boot option. I do now see a MacOS Installer option.

This time, booting it shows an Apple logo with a loading bar. Eventually, the system crashed, and upon reboot the volume was renamed as Macintosh HD, the name I expected. I am currently trying to boot from this volume. The progress bar made its way slowly to 90% before restarting from 0, and now seems stuck right at the beginning.

At the OpenCore Picker, press space and select Reset NVRAM. When the system reboots, do you see an option to boot Big Sur?

The only way we have been able to remove the "macOS Install" volume is by reinstalling the operating system in question. This does not mean deleting or erasing the existing installation. It just means running the macOS installer on the same disk once again.

I redid the installation yesterday, but it did not seem to go away.

At this point, I see my Big Sur volume, but I cannot boot from it. The above problem happens, where the progress bar eventually becomes stuck near the beginning after almost completing. No issues booting Catalina.
