[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I dug my thunderbolt3 dock out tonight Casey. I think I need to get the correct cable for it though before I can test it, I also want to continue using this EFI setup for a while before trying the dock too.

My thunderbolt interface is actually a Thunderbolt 1, so I'm currently using a Thunderbolt3 -> Thunderbolt 1 adaptor from Apple. I will have to see if I can still chain my interface off this dock using that adaptor or not, unless (and I haven't checked this yet) do both thunderbolt ports on this motherboard work (I haven't flashed the firmware).

*** USB 2.0 Instability on Certain 2020 Macs ***

May or may not be relevant to us.

Reassuring to know real Mac users are having the same symptoms. When I rearranged my usb connections, I made sure that my audio interface was in one of the top usb 2.0 ports on the back. Also noticed my ilok completely froze, to the point that I thought the dongle had died. Put that in one of the top ports as well, it came back to life and has been stable since.

Good to know it's happening with real Macs, hopefully they'll provide the fix soon.

Good try, but the plot thickens... :)
  • The two rear panel Thunderbolt / USB-C connectors support:
    • USB 3.x
    • USB 2.x
    • USB 1.x
  • However, if we connect a USB 2.x or USB 1.x device into those ports, the traffic is routed to the same old Intel PCH controller.
  • Only USB 3.x traffic is routed to the Thunderbolt USB controller.
So enabling HS08 and HS13 will allow USB 2.x and USB 1.x devices to function, but they will be controlled by the same Intel PCH controller that is already giving you trouble...

Because USB 3.x on those two ports is managed by the Thunderbolt chip, those ports are labeled SSP1 and SSP2. Because the USB Port Limit applies to each controller, and because SSP1 and SSP2 are attached to RP05.DSB2.XHC5 which only has these 2 ports, it does not affect the 15-port limit on PCI0.XHC.

Ah, all understood now. Unfortunately I mostly have USB2 devices (audio interface, MIDI controllers, copy protection dongles etc.) and a couple of USB3.x SSDs - am I right in thinking that if I attach USB3 hubs to the TB ports then depending on the type/quality of the hub your suggested workaround might not work, as the hub will try and drop down to use HS08/HS13?

@kellymac12 I see you're now on OC. I wonder if it's possible to share our EFI's to ourselves to see if we are making a glaring error anywhere and/or possibly if @CaseySJ as a 3rd party would take the time to have a quick gander?

Sure - what version of OC are you on?

[EDIT] just seen it in your signature. I'll sanitise my EFI later and share it. @CaseySJ is there an official way of sharing EFIs so that it isn't confusing to others reading the board?

That's really interesting - that definitely fits my issue and use case. I wondered for a long time if part of the problem was plugging USB 2 devices into the motherboards internal USB3 hub controlled by HS/SS07, so tried not using that at all, but I need to plug in more USB devices than the remaining ports allow me to, so I don't have an option... TB dock might be the way to go, unfortunately.

There's a thread, tried to link it above but it needs to be moderated so not showing. Search for "USB 2.0 issues on new MacBook Pro 13" 2020". Lot of people having the same problem, all on new MacBooks though. The fix... Thunderbolt hubs. Imagine this is something Apple will fix. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Weirdly, I've got my Komplete Kontrol keyboard plugged into one of the USB3 ports, and I'm not getting any problems. It's powered by the port, whereas my interface is powered externally. Both USB 2. All very odd.
