[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Some suggestions:
  • Use Boot Argument shikigva=80 and reboot. Does the system still crash/reboot?
  • Enable NVRAM so macOS can try and preserve the kernel panic information and display it on the next startup.
  • If you have a bootable backup, please see if the crashes occur when booting off the backup.
  • You may also attempt the Process of Elimination by performing a fresh installation of Catalina on a spare SSD and then installing/testing one app at a time to see if random crashes still occur.
Thanks for your reply.

After I deleted Photos library I didn't have any random crash.
My crashes are related to running Valley, opening export windows in FCPX and are systematic and not random at all.

- Shikivha=80 doesn't solve the issue
- Tested with another USB Catalina and the crash happens exactly the same
- I even tried switching on CSM but nothing changes
Can it be the motherboard / videocard Bios ? I'm using the latest Z390DESI.F9b Designare bios.

thanks

Update 1:
I have a X299 system using Asus Prime X299-A with another Powercolor RX 5700XT card and such system works great.
I swapped that card into the Designare Z390 and exactly the same reboot in Valley happens.
At the beginning I thought the CPU didn't have enough voltage as the reboot is abrupt but I rose that and didnt' make any difference.

Update 2:
I also changed bios to F8 but same issue.
To reming: when used in windows 10 the card runs without issues in Superposition. When running Valley on the mac is immediately a reboot.

- I think I've tried that shikigva value already, and ultimately ended up removing it completely. I have just tried switching over to your OpenCore setup (stock config) to see if that helps the issue at all. If it doesn't, I'll try 80 with it and see if that helps (unless you think I should just put 80 in it right now?).

- Native NVRam is enabled - but, I haven't been able to get any useful information back. The thing that's making this difficult is I'm not getting Kernel Panics. I'll generally be working in Ableton or on Chrome, and suddenly, the system just stops responding to user input. Audio/music I have playing continues playing, but it's almost like the mouse and keyboard just stop working. It's either that, or perhaps they are still working (as is the rest of the system), but the video card stops refreshing the screen? I don't know what it is at this point, but the system doesn't just hard-lock and stop working entirely. It seems to stops responding to input, and I have to manually reboot the computer. Upon rebooting, I haven't been able to find anything useful in Console. I'll try leaving it sit for a few minutes the next time I see it lock up to see if it does ultimately result in a Kernel Panic though, as I agree, that information would be helpful.

- Beyond that - New motherboard. New ram. New video card. New fresh install. This is a very purpose built system for audio production. There are not many programs beyond Ableton. It's intentionally lean to keep it light and keep problems at bay. I can attest to the hardware otherwise being stable under Windows when running games though, as it is a dual-boot system.

I think the real question is what I pointed out in my 2nd bulletpoint - is the system actually locking up, is the video card not refreshing the screen, or is the USB system dropping the keyboard/mouse out? If we can answer that, we might be able to shed some light on the actual issue.
Same issues for me. The system does lock up, it’s not just a USB or screen refresh issue. If you turn your monitors off and then on after it happens you just get back screens, and you can’t screen share in or anything like that. strange though, audio continues to play When things lock up. after much searching and much frustration I’m thinking it’s a graphics issue. Doesn’t seem like updated drivers are in the new .4 beta yet.

I recently updated to 10.15.4 beta and deleted my photos library but haven’t had a chance to really test things out yet. I’m guessing things won’t improve and that the 5700 is the issue. Seems like the navi stuff is total crap on mac at the moment. Poor performance and really buggy, on hacks egpu setups and macs alike. The only thing I haven’t tried is abandoning the 5700 and Catalina and buying another rx 580 and going back to Mojave and see how that goes. What a nightmare.

For me it's different.
The crash happens systematically and not random.
When it happens is only through a reboot.

>> Some people have been successful with AptioMemoryFix, but it's been a hit-or-miss for most.<<

I wonder why this is? I've never had any problems running AptioMemoryFix on my system. The only reason I swapped it for OC-Quirks and FwRuntimeServices was to obtain native NVRAM

We see from @zzmadd's original post that replacing the RX 5700 XT with an RX 570 prevents the crash. So your motherboard, CPU, and memory are most likely not the issue.

If you can borrow an alternative non 5700-series GPU, please try that. You may also try:
  • Physically removing the RX 5700 XT.
  • Enabling IGPU in BIOS (if you're using OpenCore, please check whether system will boot).
  • Setting Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007.
  • Connecting your monitor to one of the two Thunderbolt/USB-C ports on the rear IO panel via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
  • You can also connect via HDMI, but that will require adding frame buffer patches. This is easy to do in Clover, but a bit more painful in OpenCore. Using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable is the most convenient option.
This will further confirm whether your main components are okay, and will pinpoint the RX 5700 XT as the cause of the nightmare.

I am already on Catalina, just trying to get to the latest version 10.15.3.

My CCC backup was complete, tried the upgrade and it seems to fail midway. The computer reboots and the upgrade still shows as available.
When the computer reboots you will find a new option in Clover Boot Menu that contains the word "Install", such as Install macOS Catalina. You must select that if it's not selected by default.

Hey @CaseySJ
I have 2 questions:
1.
I was thinking of changing my SMBIOS to iMac Pro 1,1 (from iMac 19,1).
Do you think it would be an advantage as a video editing platform?
What would be the best way to do this?
I know i need to change the config.plist under SMBIOS...
But aren't there one or two other steps?

2.
I used your Catalina backup miniguide.
Everything worked as written other than there were no files in the EFI folder after backup..(using the EFIClone-v4.sh script)
The EFI partition was created, with nothing in it.
I copied the contents of my boot EFI into it and rebooted...it worked...but just wondering why the script didn't copy the data?

Thanks as always
J-P

I can add that on the very same system the RX 5700 XT in Windows 10 works great.
And another RX 5700XT identical to this works great on an Asus Prime X299-A. I even took that card (identical) and dropped it into the Designare and the very same reboot happens in Valley.

I'm also trying to run this card on an Asus motherboard.
It doesn't even start. The system gets stuck before loading the driver using the RX 5700XT.
If I drop a RX 570 the system runs immediately.

The steps are:
  • Make a full bootable backup first.
  • Sign out of iCloud, Messages, FaceTime.
  • Change SMBIOS. This will also generate new Serial Number and Board Serial Number. Copy the new Board Serial Number into Clover Configurator --> RtVariables --> MLB.
  • Change shikigva to 80.
  • Disable IGPU in BIOS (although recent reports suggest it may be okay to keep it on, but first disable it).
  • After rebooting, log in to iCloud, Messages, FaceTime.
  • You may need to re-license your applications.

As mentioned in the boot backup guide, EFIClone-v4 runs in TEST mode until you edit the script and change TEST_SWITCH="Y" to TEST_SWITCH="N". When TEST_SWITCH is turned OFF (set to "N") then it will run in normal mode and copy files.

You can copy this script to your Downloads folder and then do this:
  • Remove the "quarantine" flag by running Terminal and typing:
    Code:
    cd Downloads
    xattr -d com.apple.quarantine EFIClone-v4.sh
  • Then edit the file and change "TEST_SWITCH" to "N".
  • Save the file.
  • Now repeat the process of copying it to the Carbon Copy Cloner "scripts" folder:
    • From CCC's Utilities menu, select Reveal CCC's Scripts Folder
    • Copy the modified EFIClone-v4.sh into the "scripts" folder that appears.
    • From CCC's Utilities menu, now select Secure CCC's Scripts Folder
  • Now the script will (should) run.
