[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

VirtualSMC.efi is not in the UEFI folder. I tried the Clover update to 5102 from 5099 but VirtualSMC.efi is not offered in any of the folders see attached. Is this normal now?

As @jiffyslot mentioned, the GC-Alpine Ridge can certainly be used together with the on-board Titan Ridge. However, only Thunderbolt 3 monitors and USB-C devices (not Thunderbolt devices) are expected to connect. An occasional Thunderbolt device might connect, but it would be better to attach real Thunderbolt devices to the on-board controller instead.
I get My board Saturday to I'm exited follow this guide and reinstall.. @jiffyslot shared his ssdt for combining the ALPINE card with the Designare.. THank you both @CaseySJ & @jiffyslot for the direction it is priceless :D Hope it goes well..

Hi there! I've followed this golden build with very good success! However, instead I am using an i9-9900K with 64GB of HyperX Predator 3600Mhz RAM. BIOS has been tweaked as well as EFI and all seems to be good.

However, I am noticing one small issue that is bugging me: Whenever the system goes through the initial verbose boot phase/screen, at the end of this process (both during installation and after) my display loses signal, and I have to unplug the HDMI cable from the GPU and reinsert it, then the display will reconnect and works.

I am running a Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU. Any ideas what might be the issue here?
This is a somewhat frequent problem. If you search this site or browse through the Catalina Desktop Support or Post-Install Graphics forums, you’ll find several threads on the subject.

One quick suggestion is to try enabling CSM Support in BIOS.

Hello @docfiru

Welcome to the forum! Did you actually perform the fresh installation with OpenCore instead of Clover? Here's a suggestion:
  • Because macOS is already installed, you can create a new USB boot disk with Clover by following the first part of the Catalina Mini-Guide (skip the steps related to copying macOS onto the flash disk -- just follow the Clover installation steps, replacing drivers/kexts/SSDTs, and modifying config.plist).
  • Then insert the USB flash disk into the Hackintosh, press F12 at boot and select the USB. Now Clover will start up. Boot macOS from the internal SSD and check sleep/wake behavior.

Thank you @CaseySJ . I did exactly as you suggested and after booting with Clover, things worked flawlessly.

Yes, I had performed a fresh install using OpenCore 0.5.4 (compiled from latest) and with the CFG Lock disabling BIOS flash (to get native NVRAM). This was my first Hackintosh and I decided to go off the deep end, haha. It worked very well, except for the sleep issue.

I disabled the custom DSDT file on OpenCore and was able to get sleep to work without insta-waking afterward, so I suspect it is some sort of USB mapping issue.

By the way, I verified all the options @ymym listed in his post:

-Uncheck DevirtualiseMmio & DisableVariableWrite in the Booter section and also uncheck AppleCpuPMCfgLock & AppleXcpmCfgLock in the Kernel section.
-Disable Watchdog & LegacyEnable also unchecked.
-Regarding the boot-args only slide=0 & agdpmod=pikera were used.

All that worked well for me.

I tried Clover given your suggestion however, and actually liked it a lot more. Boot times are actually faster on Clover for me (on a 970 plus NVME) and I like the GUI, so I think I'll be sticking with Clover for now, given how smoothly it works. I suspect getting OpenCore working would have only been a matter of a few extra hours mapping the USB ports however.

Many thanks again for the guide, it was super helpful. If there's anything else I can do to contribute, please let me know!

VirtualSmc.efi has never been part of Clover. We have to download it from the acidanthera GitHub website.
@CaseySJ - Here's a stupid question... since it seems as though I have (in the reach of my memory) used Clover updater to install drives and for some reason I had VirtualSMC in 10.14.5 without remembering how it got there... do I simply copy/paste VirtualSMC into the UEFI folder and remove SMCHelper? Thanks for clarifying this for me.

@CaseySJ
My Designare motherboarrd is not detecting my UAD Twin MK 2 device via Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Is there any solution you can suggest?

Yes, I did resolve my SATA issues, but it's been so long now I can't quite remember how. I did install a 4-Port SATA 6G PCI Express 2.0 Host Adapter back in March of 2019 so that could have been it. I do have far too many SATA devices on my rig, but everything is running well so I'm not going to mess with anything for now.

Interestingly, my SATA4 / SATA5 ports are not working.
I have already reset CMOS and restored the factory default settings.
Battery already changed.
Tried various settings (CSM and SATA settings) and nothing appears in BIOS settings, always shows the device not connected
I made sure to connect devices that worked on the other ports and still couldn't make them work.
If I plug in devices between port 0 and 3 work perfectly, but port 4 and 5 don't
Im running out of ideas

This was my first round of testing, I still have to install a very big load of apps and plugins, will update the list once done:

What is flawlessly working after 3 days of continuous stress testing and troubleshooting:

System:

  • Sleep/Wake/Restart, Screensavers, Logout, Switch User, Mission Control and Multiple Desktops
  • Every single USB port (front case included)
  • Both Ethernet ports
  • Wireless charging from case BeQuiet Dark Base Pro 900 (Mobo USB)
  • Thunderbolt
  • Usb-C

OSX Mojave:

  • iCloud, FaceTime, Messages, App Store
  • Notification Center & Sync
  • Time Machine
  • Adobe Flash, Xtools & Java
  • Quicklook h.264, ProRes, 4k, (for pdf and other files you need to configure the SMBIOS, Vega64 -> iMacPro 1,1)
  • iStat (fully working) - Fans in BIOS = Auto
  • Ask Siri
  • Quick Time, Screen, Audio, and Movie Recording
  • IACBus (needed for Hijacking Audio and Midi rerouting purposes)

External Gear:

  • Tascam 16x08 USB Audio Interface
  • UAD Apollo Twin MKII (Thunderbolt)

  • Protools 2018.12 - Everything
  • Ableton Live 10 - Everything
  • Wine Stable
  • iLok & eLicenser
  • Final Cut Pro all Res & 4k (but to make it work you have to disable the internal GPU otherwise it won’t even launch)
  • Photoshop CC 2019
  • Audition CC 2019
  • Razer Synapse, Steam, (although I advice having a secondary Windows HD, like me for gaming purposes)
  • OCB, broadcast, livestream, screen recording

Not Working / Issues to be addressed:

Gpu stresss test crash after 21 min, (Heaven Benchmark) Undergoing investigation
Some Finder graphic glitch like if you delete a file it will still be displayed until you close the folder and reopen it again.
Still have to order the bluetooth/WiFi card to test Magic Mouse & Trackpad, Handoff, Airdrop & Bluetooth Devices

@CaseySJ and the others from this thread,
Thanks everyone, it was really fun and somewhat not too complicated to build this beast, also for a noob like me,
it's my first Hackintosh, and I can't believe it's working.

I couldn't have done it without everyone's help.
You are using UAD thunderbolt MK2 to TB3 via apple adapter??
