[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

looks like this autoswitching is not happening. Does that mean its a Hardware issue ? any advise ?
Because I don't own a Thunderbolt monitor, I can only speculative. Here's something to try at your own discretion. This in itself is not a solution, but it might provide a little more background information. So it's entirely optional...
  • Disconnect the DisplayPort cable from the DP-In port.
  • Enable iGPU in BIOS.
  • Set Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007 (non-headless).
  • Connect Thunderbolt cable from either of the two TB3 ports to the LG UltraFine 5K monitor.
  • Do you get a picture? Is it 4K or 5K?
  • The iGPU (UHD 630) can drive a Thunderbolt 5K display directly.
Then do this:
  • Without powering down or rebooting the system, disconnect the Thunderbolt cable from the computer.
  • Connect the Radeon VII to the DP-In port.
  • Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the correct TB3 port.
  • Do you still get a picture?
  • If so, does "Graphcis/Displays" indicate it's driven by the Radeon or by the IGPU?

Just some info. I have 5K LG Ultrafine, Radeon VII 2 4K LG UltraFine. My setup now is:
  • Radeon DP Out 1 -> Designare DP in -> Designare TB1 (top one) -> LG 5K
  • Designare TB2 (bottom one) -> LG 4K 1
  • Radeon DP Out 2 -> Gigabyte Alpine Ridge add-on card (slot 2) DP in -> LG 4K 2
I don't have to authorize in Windows anymore to get camera, audio etc from LG 5K but still 5K at 4K resolution since I have the older version of the LG 5K. Hope this helps

BTW - the Gigabyte boot screen AND clover is at 640x480 on LG 4K 1 - only real issue

Wow, that’s quite a setup! I am surprised that the GC-Alpine Ridge Card works on this motherboard because we don’t have a THB_C header. I suppose that connection is not strictly necessary. But hot-plug may not work?

haha thanks :crazy:

I have never used the functionality of the Alpine Ridge cards - and no, the TB3 doesn't work on that. I basically just use it as a DP to TB3 adapter. It's not even seen by the OS and could probably power it outside the case with some adapters and soldering but idk for sure.

I've tried with a "normal" center display but the colors never matched - now they do!

Hi Casey, just finished the build and setup.
Of all the things I cant get working right now - its midnight now - the wifi is not even showing up.
I know this card should work cause i used the same one in another machine. Can you please take a look? or suggest something please?

(tried both bottom PCEI small and longer slots)

Also noticed that waking up from sleep, disconnected the USB that was connected - any ideas whats going on there? thanks mate.

I may have some not-so-good news regarding the ABWB card. Please see the top of this reply:

If you follow the two links provided, you'll see that this card is not recommended because of the troubles people have reported. The Fenvi FV-T919 is the preferred choice.

The second issue occurs on real Macs as well. USB drives will not eject and reconnect before and after sleep. Third-party tools such as Jettison can help. Please see the spoiler labeled External Disks Not Ejected During Sleep:

Let me see if I understand this correctly:
  • You are trying to set “Boot macOS from Mojave” as the default option in Clover, but it keeps reverting to “Boot MacOS Install from Mojave”?

Yes.

After going through your guide I renamed my macOS filesystem to Macintosh HD, so I had to reconfigure Clover to use the "Macintosh HD" boot volume as the default at that point. Automatic default boot was working fine until I later restored data from a real iMac Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant. Then the ...Install... boot option came back and it's the default for some reason. I've tried setting Macintosh HD and Boot macOS from Macintosh HD as the default volume using Clover Configurator, but neither made an automatic boot work.

  • When you manually select “Boot MacOS from Mojave”, does the system boot up properly and let you log in?

Yes.

  • If so, try System Preferences —> Software Update and see if the 10.14.6 supplemental update is available. If it is, go ahead and perform that update. This will kill two birds with one stone (although we should not kill birds): it will remove the extraneous boot option in Clover and update the system.

Unfortunately it appears that my initial install included the supplemental update, as verified by Software Update and the System Version build number of 18G87 as reported by System Information. :problem:

  • If your system is already up to date, it may be possible to remove the MacOS install option via “diskutil” with Terminal. The install option is an APFS volume in the same Container as the primary boot volume and the Recovery volume. APFS volumes inside a Container can be deleted, but we should be very careful with this.

I've messed around with LILO and GRUB boot loader configurations in the past and Clover seems oddly limiting regarding manually specifying boot options and order. Especially for software that otherwise seems quite powerful.

Here's what's going on with my disks (I installed Windows 10 on a separate SSD (disk1) and Ubuntu Linux on a separate HDD (disk3) before installing macOS, and I also have another HDD for macOS data (disk4)):

Code:
$ diskutil list

Hi Casey again, I have a problem that I cannot explain. I had a success installation. My issue is that I'm trying to install apps and some of them are crashing while I'm trying to open them. For example FCPX 10.4.6 is crashing. I downloaded it again from App Store and still is crashing. I tried from the same file on my main system with 9900k and it works fine. Is there any chance the SMBIOS which is 19.1 to have issues with i5-9600k? Strange things happen today..!
