[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Booting into Windows has the effect of initializing the Titan Ridge TB3 controller via the Windows drivers. When we subsequently warm-boot into macOS, the effect lingers. So the behavior you're describing is "scientific". Various Thunderbolt add-in-cards on other motherboards require their owners to cold-boot into Windows and warm-boot into macOS.

Casey,

Yes, I've seen this warm-boot procedure concerning add-in TB3 cards but I didn't think it applied to the built in TB3 controller on the Z390 DESIGNARE. Have you heard of others having to do the warm-boot procedure on the built in controller?

Yes. Are you having problems with USB devices on the LG 5K or something else?

No, my issue was the LG 5k wasn't consistently working in macOS. Sometimes it would boot into a black screen, sometimes not.

But it seems I have found a solution/workaround. @CaseySJ @JayShay

What has seemed to solve the issue of my LG 5K sometimes not booting into macOS was plugging in another monitor into my Vega 64. I have reboot many times and this seems to have solved it. All the USB-C ports and everything else on the LG 5k work fully in macOS, too. So my hackintosh is now essentially perfect (sorta).

When I boot into macOS, the boot begins on my LG 5k, but the login appears on my 2nd monitor and the LG 5k subsequently begins to work.

My setup now looks like this in order to get my LG 5k working consistently:
- Followed this guide exactly
- I have 2 monitors total plugged into my Vega 64.
  • My LG 5k into the Thunderbolt 3 port (with my Vega 64 plugging into mobo via DP port of course)
  • A separate monitor that is also connected into the Vega 64.
I can hot plug other thunderbolt 3 devices such as my Apollo Twin, etc.

So if anybody else in the future experiences weird issues with the LG 5k where it only works sometimes, try this.

Can you confirm that you are seeing true 5K from your monitor? Unfortunately I am not any more. I had it working at first, but something changed. Thought maybe it was Whatevergreen (word is you don't need this with Radeon VII) but tested and doesn't work with or without.

You can see my attached screenshot running at 5K - On my real MacBook Air this is running 5K UHD.

Also, are you running SSDT-Z390-DESIGNARE-TB3HP-V4.aml ?

I am seeing full 5k with my monitor.

I am seeing full 5k with my monitor.

Thanks for sharing. That's over the Max resolution of the monitor. Attached is what 5K should look like (My 5K attached to my MacBook Air). Also, I've attached the resolution from SwitchResX. If you double click on your resolution in SwitchResX it will show timings etc. Do you mind sharing? I've attached mine also.

From what I'm reading it is impossible to get 5K resolution from one DP 1.4 input because of the way the LG UF 5K bonds two DP 1.2 inputs even though DP 1.4 can handle 5K no problem.

I don't have resX, but I have these options when I press option and click the resolution settings. I had resX installed a while back and I remember resX also giving me the option to put it into 5k.

I reinstalled SwitchResX and it infact displays the same thing as you. I can still put the display in full 5k in the display settings. Since this is a hardware limitation, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm just happy its working at all.

Per an earlier question you asked, warm-booting into macOS is not technically necessary on this board, but it can provide some benefits as you’ve noted. @Bobbert’s two-monitor solution avoids Windows. If you have a second monitor, I’m curious if cold-booting into macOS will also enable 5K and the monitor’s on-board devices (USB ports, camera, etc).

If you search for posts in this thread by @TheAsocial, you’ll find his experiences with the same monitor, but he didn’t seem to encounter any issues back then. Perhaps he didn’t test everything...

Your IOReg file shows that you have not installed SSDT-DESIGNARE-Z390-NO-CNVW.aml into the CLOVER/ACPI/patched folder of the EFI partition of your Mojave SSD. Please see Final Steps in Post-Installation in the build guide.

I am back @CaseySJ. Thank you for your support:D. Actually, I did put SSDT-DESIGNARE-Z390-NO-CNVW.aml into patched folder. However, I found that the “Automerges” in ACPI of clover configuration makes the boot skips it.
I did some fresh installations to figure out that.

However, I still cannot find anyway to fix my system in:
- random crashing/ cpu fan speed goes crazy/ OS shut/ hardware keeps running for nothing.
- Still no working shutdown/sleep/ wake
- And bluetooth cannot work also.

Can you please help me to identify this. :( I bought my build, finished it for a month already, and still cannot make it work probably. I am panic like a kernel for now.

Of course. Let me take a look at your CLOVER folder. Can you please compress and upload it from EFI partition of Mojave SSD? Also upload screenshot of /Library/Extensions folder.

@CaseySJ I am using iMacPro1,1 SMBIOS now with Vega 64. In your spoiler on page 1 (see attached) you recommend keeping "framebuffer-patch-enable" line in Devices/Properties for iMacPro1,1 setup. What is the reason for it with iGPU disabled?
And do I retain the whole line entry "framebuffer-patch-enable 01000000 DATA" that I originally used for UHD 630?
