[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

...
Only few... Alfred, iStatMenues, BOINC with some projects for testing how hot the cpu would get, when in 100% usage. A mac driver for a cheap wlan/bluetooth dongle. (I will get a ABWB 802,11 AC WI-FI + Bluetooth 4.0 PCI-Express (PCI-E) BCM943602CS Combo in the next days.)
Please see some cautionary tales about the ABWB card in this system:
I think so... The igpu should be configured that no display would be driven. And I have chosen an iMac 19,1 as the platform. I hope that this is correct :/
At the moment no, I don't. But I have bought an adapter that converts DVI to DisplayPort. But when I tried it with my Cinema Display it wasn't really working well. (Smaller resolution, black screen a couple of times, etc.)
I think there's somehow a conflict with the window server. At least the weird graphics would suggest that, I think. I also added a photo I did, when some of these graphics glitches showed up.
Yes that glitch does not look good. I assume the monitor works correctly, the video cable is securely attached on both ends, and it's a known good cable. Do you recall whether these glitches were present from the very beginning (right after installation was done) or whether they started sometime after some applications/drivers were installed?

Is the RX580 GPU properly installed along with the PCIe power cable (8-pin)?
Again a big, big thank you and greetings from Austria :)
Spent a weekend in Salzburg during a business trip to Freising near Munchen. I clearly remember that trip not only because of how wonderful it was, but because on that particular trip I had decided to leave my camera at home. This was before the dawn of the smartphone. Alas, I made do with many many postcards. :)

Hello! Thank you so much for this guide, I've gotten everything up and running now except I have a couple issues. Final Cut Pro crashes upon opening and I can't get my Apple Thunderbolt Display to work, has anyone found a solution to this? Thanks!

Hello @mbapple,

Please update your Account Details page with CPU, Graphics, and Motherboard information. This is required when asking for help.

For Final Cut issues, please see the first table in Going the Extra Mile. It is necessary to set Platform ID to 0x3E980003 for headless mode.

The Apple Thunderbolt Display is explained in the section Thunderbolt 3 Experiences (unfortunately):

Hello @CaseySJ

Sorry I'm new here haha, thanks for pointing that out.

For the model identifier I chose 19,2 because I'm using an Intel Core i7-8700k which is what the 19,2 uses while the 19,1 uses an 8700k. Should I have not done this? I will look into setting that Platform ID, although I'm not running headless.

Aw man, has he tried via a thunderbolt 2 dock? I plan on trying this soon, I really hope I can get it to work.

Thanks for the quick response!

The standard version of USBInjectAll.kext is incompatible with iMac19,2, but will work with iMac19,1. However, there is a modified version that supports iMac19,2. You therefore have 2 options:
  1. Switch to iMac19,1 in SMBIOS.
  2. Replace USBInjectAll.kext in both CLOVER/kexts/Other and /Library/Extensions with the following version: https://github.com/Snikii/OS-X-USB-Inject-All/releases
    • After replacing the file in /Library/Extensions, please run Kext Utility to rebuild the kernel cache.
Alas we have tried everything humanly (and legally) possible for the Apple Thunderbolt Display. This includes long detailed technical sessions with engineers at Gigabyte and Intel. The final conclusion: Nope. It will not work.

There are plenty of very good, modern alternatives on the market today...

My Fenvi T9191 arrived yesterday and I now have a fully working machine!

Running 10.14.5. In built graphics driving two monitors - HDMI and Thunderbolt to DP. Firewire card working. Bluetooth, Wireless, An extra 4 USB 2 ports on the rear and two on the front. On board and HDMI audio.

Thank you so much Casey for all your work here.

The last thing to get working is my Antelope Orion 32+. I've looked into it but it's all beyond me. Does anyone know the likelihood of the thunderbolt bus ever working fully? I've spotted a few errors on boot with the orion as seen in this image posted here. Can anyone shed some light on the situation with this information?

@gundogg9999,

We cannot install any other Thunderbolt controllers on this system, but we can exploit the daisy-chaining feature of Thunderbolt like this:
  • Connect a TB2-to-TB3 adapter on one of the Thunderbolt ports on the back panel.
  • Connect a TB2 Audio Device to this adapter.
  • Then User A can connect their TB2 Audio Device to the adapter.
  • If that device has a Thunderbolt pass-through port, then User B can connect their TB2 Audio Device to that port.
  • And if User B's Audio Device also has a pass-through port, then User C can daisy chain off of User B.
  • And User D can daisy chain off of User C.
A daisy chain is limited to 6 devices.

But the Designare Z390 has 2 on-board Thunderbolt ports. Each one can be daisy chained.

You could theoretically connect 12 Thunderbolt 2 devices using only two TB2-to-TB3 adapters.

Thanks bro - good info.

Confirmed! Version 1.2.0rc1 works perfectly and does not require unloading com.apple.driver.usb.IOUSBHostHIDDevice!
I have to go figure out what I did with this. I know I have reinstalled since I built Python 3. Now that you guys have this working, I guess I'll build this back up again!! Great work!!!

I've tried to get my Thunderbolt Display to work using a few different TB3<-->TB2 adapters but no joy yet. I've also tried an OWC Dock and that didn't work. However now that my machine is more stable, I'll them all a shot again and see if things might be different.

I’ve updated that section of the build guide. Hopefully it’s more detailed/complete now.
