[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I do not want to be controversial, but maybe @3Dman, also has a real iMac.ioreg to know the true cpu-type, but I think the information was obtained from my post
If I'm wrong, I apologize.
I followed much of the discussion in that thread and you certainly get the credit for discovering this. 3Dman gets the credit for providing the tip here in response to a help request. So both names have been added.

@genzai, if I recall correctly from three hundred pages ago(!), some UAD or other audio interface software has rather restrictive license policies. Audio is often imported into Final Cut and Premiere projects. And many plugins are also licensed. So a Final Cut or Premiere or Photoshop project can depend on a set of discrete licenses.

Not everyone has a large set of licenses to worry about, and for them it may be okay to switch to a different system definition.

Note that with MacMini8,1 or iMac18,3 it is not necessary to disable iGPU in BIOS. However, iMacPro1,1 requires disabling iGPU — and it provides a minimal gain in benchmark performance.

It would be helpful to compare render times and synthetic benchmarks between iMacPro1,1 and Macmini8,1 and iMac19,1. I don’t think the differences will be substantial (probably 2 to 5%) but it would be good to gather the data and let users decide for themselves what is best.

Another memorable Star Trek quote:
“Just because you can do a thing, it does not follow that you must do that thing.” LLAP.

I second this. I learned the hard way a while ago when I changed my system def and had some of my licenses locked on my "old" machine. Had to contact the software developers to reset my licenses. However, if there is an easy way to change system definitions without going through the software license headache, I'd love to know!

Well software can use any number of ways to determine if your system has changed and certainly not all software uses the same methods for licensing. The best way is always to un-license and re-license software that you know has strict licensing policies. I have to deal with this regularly with Pomfort software. That said as long as you copy your serial, Board serials, MLB and UUIDs and paste them back into the new SMBIOS config its hard to imagine software will notice anything has changed. That said the SMBIOS serial info IS used in some cosmetic places to identify the system (in "about this mac" for instance), so i do recommend settings everything up to be congruent - imac19 SMBIOS with iMac19 serial, etc.

PS-Also noticed that as of 10.14.5 "About This Mac" correctly identifies my CPU. It is no longer "unknown". I am not sure if this is related to iMac19 system, def- I suspect it's probably just because the OS is finally recognizing this CPU now.

I'm about to embark on this build, it's my my first hack.... The machine's built and I'm ready to begin tweaking the OS but there's one thing that's taken me a little thinking to wrap my head around...

If I clone my Mac Pro drive would I just need to install clover onto the cloned drive then begin the clover/ mount EFI/add kexts, etc process and go from there? Or is it be advisable to clean install for any reason?

Also, anyone have issues with more than 2 sticks of RAM?
The machine posts with 2 installed but won't with 4. Tried different slot configurations etc... More than 2 sticks and nada...

*** macOS 10.14.5 Update ***

Just completed the 10.14.5 update, but this update was somewhat scary compared to previous updates. Here's what you should do and what you should expect:
  • Make a complete bootable backup of your system. Use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Backup the EFI folder as well.
    • Your bootable backup will not be bootable until the EFI folder is copied from the Mojave EFI partition to the EFI partition of the clone drive.
  • Ensure that your USB SSDT is installed and your USB port limit patches in config.plist are Disabled.
    • The Mojave 10.14.4 USB port limit patch is not compatible with 10.14.5.
  • Begin the update from System Preferences --> Software Update.
  • Here's what you can expect during the update itself:
    • After the 2.5GB download, the system will logout and begin installation.
    • A progress bar will appear. A few seconds later the system will spontaneously reboot.
    • At the Clover Boot Menu, "Boot Install macOS from Mojave" will be auto-selected. In the rare event that it is not, use arrow keys to select it yourself.
    • The standard startup process will begin -- an Apple Icon in the center with a progress bar below.
    • Midway through, you might see small purple horizontal lines (@Abdala's screenshot) randomly drawn at the top of the screen. DON'T PANIC and don't interrupt the system. Just wait...
    • About 30 seconds later the screen will go blank. Again, DON'T PANIC. Just wait.
    • The startup process will resume and the macOS Updater will begin. You might see "45 minutes remaining" or something similar.
    • But a few seconds later (maybe 10 seconds) the system will spontaneously reboot! This is normal.
    • At the Clover Boot Menu, "Boot Install macOS from Mojave" will again be auto-selected. In the rare event that it is not, use arrow keys to select it yourself.
    • Now you'll see the Apple Icon in the center once again, and a progress bar below.
    • Midway through, those random horizontal purple lines will reappear. Just wait.
    • About 30 seconds later the screen will go blank again. Just wait.
    • Now the macOS installer will appear and you'll see "45 minutes remaining" or something similar. This should take much less than 45 minutes. The installer will complete the installation now.
    • At the end, the system will gracefully reboot with a 10 second countdown. Let it be.
    • At the Clover Boot Menu, the standard option will now be selected: Boot macOS from Mojave. Don't change it.
    • During this final startup phase you might see those horizontal purple lines again for a second. Don't worry. The system will rebuild kernel caches (which means startup can be a few seconds longer than normal) and then the login screen should appear.
  • Congratulations. You're now on 10.14.5

Notice below that 10.14.5 properly recognizes the i9-9700K processor!!

I just completed the update. a minor note--I didn't experience the horizontal purple lines on the black apple logo screen--perhaps due to having the RX590 rather than the RX580.

No need anymore for "AHCI_Intel_Generic_SATA.kext". (10.14.5)

Vega Tab kexts or injections of PowerPlayTables for Vega cards are NOT NEEDED ANYMORE in 10.14.5 :)
(Not only are they not needed anymore, the fan speed behavior is now even better without kexts or injections)

I had a lot of trouble with all 3 of my machines stalling during the download and having to restart, they always picked back up but required manual intervention numerous times. This could have been their servers being hammered I guess.

Good to know. Once a few more confirmations are posted I'll add appropriate statements to the build guide for Vega and Radeon VII owners.
