WARNING: BEFORE you read on: This thread relates to ongoing troubleshooting of a PARTIALLY-RESOLVED (as of 01/26/2019) FrameBuffer issue with the i5-8400's UHD630 graphics on the Z390 series chipset. This thread will NOT apply to laptop IGPU issues. There are many hints and suggestions herein which may or may not work for you. However, there are no hard and fast solutions herein for DUAL monitor. A workable solution for single HDMI @4K has been worked out.

I am working on my second build which is shown in my signature. I originally ordered a GA-Z370 Aorus Pro mini-iTX. But, when the merchant shipped the wrong board, I decided to roll with it. Regretting that just a bit right now.

It has been a very long fight. And, up until now, I have managed to find the information on this board that I needed to get things moving in the right direction.

This is intended to be my new HTPC and DLNA client - replacing an old, outdated, and apparently orphaned MacMini technology. Therefore, optimizing the graphics via HDMI is of utmost importance as our new TV is an 8K screen. I can happily live with the current 4K limit. (who can see the difference anyway?)

However, the UHD630 graphics display is my nemesis. It is constantly tearing, jumping, flickering, showing windows even after they are closed, ghosting movements across the screen, etc. (I'm sure you've seen it) It flickers constantly... thus has become the top priority.

[EDIT: I used the Z390 Designaire build as a starting point - removing the entries that are not needed. And, working from there. This allowed me to get the system booted and final install completed. ]

[EDIT: The case is the inWin Chopin. Thus, I am unable to install a PCIe Video card as a workaround.]

I have tried:
Installing WhateverGreen/Lilu
Result unbootable system and reinstall of MacOS. Unknown triggers.

Another thread revealed some codes to put into FakeID: 0x3e928086 and another which I cannot recall.
I Added those codes and settings into Clover Conf.
Result - None that I can discern - deleted these settings.

[EDIT: I eventually gave in and tried changing the SMBIOS to various configurations. The video settled down, albeit apparently with no acceleration, with the iMac 18,1 SM. So, that is a step in the right direction.]

I am using a USB Keyboard and mouse at present. (Logitech K120 and M100) as someone - somewhere mentioned these might be an issue. But, if they are, then Microsoft USB keyboards and mice are also an issue as I have tried them as well.
[EDIT: KB and Mouse NOT an issue.]

I am concerned that I may have something in my EFI that 'fixed' something else but, prevents the UHD630 from operating correctly.

It is understood that this issue is not firm ground for the community at this point. And, results are mixed. But, I am hoping someone can take a look at my IOReg Report and EFI and see something that I just cannot see or understand.

Thank you for your assistance.

[UPDATE 01-11-2019: I think changing the SMBIOS to 18,1 did the trick for stabilizing the video. But, now cannot get full HD resolution. Is it because the profile is for a 21 inch iMac and Not a 27" Retina? how do I get the full UHD rez from this setup?]

Latest data files have been uploaded.

[EDIT: 01152019 Removing non-working EFI file from this post to protect the innocent :-D ]

I just ran across this in the Z390 Designaire thread.

This guide is for MacOS 10.14.2 Mojave and prefers the use of an AMD RX-series graphics card because the 9th generation UHD 630 is not currently supported by any version of MacOS

Please say it ain't so!

What if I dropped down to a 7th gen i7?

[EDIT: Duh. I just realized my processor is 8th gen. Not 9th]

@jb007 , Is this type of thing in your wheelhouse?

That reminds me...I need to fix that statement now that we managed to get all ports working on the UHD630.

In your config.plist, the CsrActiveConfig is currently 0x0. This will prevent unsigned kexts from loading. Because nearly all of the Hackintosh kexts are unsigned, this can lead to a multitude of problems.

So Step 1: Set this to 0x67. Save the file, reboot, and check graphics performance again.

Sorry. I had already fixed that. I will update the EFI Folder to reflect my more recent attempts. to fix this...

Meanwhile... Anyone with a Z390 using UHD630 on a i5-8400 care to reveal how they fixed the graphics issues?

I took another look and, I actually zipped the wrong EFI folder. The corrected on is now uploaded.
I initially did a double-take. Because, I knew that had already been done.

After playing around with various settings, I am now able to boot into a clean screen. But, now... I cannot set UHD resolution. And, acceleration is apparently not working. The best I can get is 2560x1440. The selections for "more space" or "larger text" no longer appear. I just get a drop down list with 2560 WQHD as the highest possible.

Latest Info is updated in the original post if anyone can figure out why I can't get UHD rez out of the IGPU.

Some questions:
  1. Is your monitor connected via HDMI or DisplayPort?
  2. Your Platform ID is currently set to 0x3E9B0007 and Device ID is 0x3E92. These are okay, but often they lead to black screen (i.e. no video) from HDMI port. DisplayPort should be okay.
  3. Please check "About this Mac" -- what does it show for "Graphics"? (Screenshot in earlier post says UHD630, which is correct, but does it still say this?)
If you are currently connected via HDMI, please try this:
  1. Shutdown computer.
  2. Remove HDMI cable and insert DisplayPort cable (hopefully your monitor supports DP).
  3. Power up and check "About this Mac" -- what does it show for "Graphics"?
  4. Do you get the scale options in System Preferences (more space, larger text, etc.) with DP?
It might be necessary to swap BusIDs between HDMI and DP, but do check the above items first. Swapping BusIDs is explained in this guide:

Hello @CaseySJ !! Thank you for stepping in to assist.

1A - My monitor IS connected with HDMI. this will be a dual-screen HTPC. I am trying DP as suggested.
2A - What are my options for Platform ID's? I have tried all three in the Clover Configurator with no luck.
3A - When connected only by DP (hard reset), the "About" window shows the same (Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536MB)
4A - I do NOT get the 'more space, larger text' scale options in Displays --> Display. It is still just a list with the highest being 2560x1440 and lowest 720p.

It seems I may have to do something about the screen size it recognizes. The SMBIOS is 18,1 (21.5-inch screen) as this was the only SMB I could boot with. I tried 18,2 and 18,3 as well. <-- no boot.

I am reading the linked guide. Frankly, FB-Patcher intimidates the heck out of me. But, I guess it is time to dive in and try to be a little more knowledgable.

Any continued assistance you could provide would be very welcome and much appreciated.

Ken

If you can upload the current config.plist from your Mojave SSD’s EFI partition, I’ll add framebuffer patches based on another Gigabyte 390-series motherboard. That should enable your HDMI port. And then you could text the Displays dialog again.

UPDATE: Please try attached config.plist with HDMI cable. Of course, backup current config.plist from the EFI Partition of Mojave internal disk and copy this in its place.
