pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

There are too many variables to overclocking. It took me a quite a while to find what was the best multiplier, voltage, LLC, etc for my particular CPU. It's best to consult an overclocking forum to learn how to best achieve stability and test for stability.

it was actually stable prior to the 10.13.6 update.... not entirely sure if the update broke it.

4.9 is stable on the windows partition ssd i have. very odd.

I have no idea. 10.13.6 has not affected my overclock at all.

It summer and temps can affect overclocks greatly. Those who use water coolers may need to monitor VRM temps.

I think I've resolved it. turns out my AVX offset was set to 0, should have been 3.

Hi! First of all I'd like to greatly thank @pastrychef for this guide. It is amazing. Also the EFI folder, everything...
I edit video for a living, and my 2014 5K Retina iMac was dying fast. It's been working 24/7 for the past 4 years (8-10h of export + 6-8h of transcode + 4-6 of editing) and now it can't do much without crashing, overheating, etc.

I didn't wanna pay for 2013 hardware (current Mac Pro) and don't need a screen (iMac Pro), so I jumped to the Hackintosh world and built a very similar PC to yours, although I got the Z370-E instead of the -G (i wanted large ATX).

I got some problems which I solved (will post anyways because someone might run into them), and some others that are still present and maybe you guys can help me out:

1. [SOLVED] If I didn't disable Launch CSM in BIOS, I couldn't use Clover whatsoever. It was there, but I could only see a small grey rectangle, everything was out of sight (2K monitor).
2. [SOLVED]Since you said that clover fixed ram sticks being in A2/B2 I did that... but it didn't work. I had to remove the second fan of my Noctua in order to remove one stick and finally install macOS, since it wouldn't past the apple logo with both sticks. After full installation I tried to put the other stick back in, but wouldn't work. I had to put both in A1/B1.
3. [SOLVED] My Samsung 970 Evo was performing pretty poor. It was only hitting 1500MB/s both W/R. After digging around I found that the BIOS was limiting its bandwith to x2. I switched to x4 (at the cost of losing SATA 5 and 6) and now it's full speed.
4. [help!] My boot time is super long. I mean full 40 - 45 seconds. Considering the 970 Evo... it should be like what... 5 seconds tops? See attached video: Loading bar goes pretty fast up to 50%; then it slows down a lot until 75% more or less where the screen goes black for 1 second; and then speeds up to load the rest pretty fast again.
5. [help!] I wasn't able to perform the iMessage fix correctly. Is it still valid? Is iMessage the only thing that I lose if I don't manage to get it done?
6. [help!] USB Fix... well, that looks super hard. This is my first Hackintosh and I don't even know how you edit some things in clover. What is that UI in which you edit stuff? If I can't understand that... I'm not sure I'd be able to make those files you mention and use them... Also I read the reason why the 15 port limit patch isn't good enough, but can't reallt understand it (sorry english isn't my first languange, specially for technical stuff).
7. [help!] How do I completely disable system updates? I don't usually have much time, and if I'm not mistaken the OS updates some stuff by itself, am I wrong?
8. [advice] Do you recommend OC? I got your same RAM which should be able to run at 3200MHz but according to BIOS it's running at 2133MHz. Also my CPU is at stock. I guess I'd take a lot of advantage when editing, but I don't want an unstable system. (I mounted a Noctua NH-D15 with one fan, because I had to unmount the second one in order to move the ram sticks and can't put it back in due to the super large Vega 64).
9. [question] Has the Vega fan issue gone away? I ask because I don't think it was at full speed at any time, although it's true the system has a fresh install, I haven't loaded FCPX or anything just yet.

Thank you all very much!

P.S: Attached the video as .zip because the forums wouldn't let me post a link to YT. Also, it didn't let me upload the .mp4 because of an invalid extension.

boot in verbose mod ( -v or enable on clover) and see what its happening ...what is long time to boot

4. It takes approx 30 seconds for me to boot from my 970 EVO. I think that disabling Trim may speed it up a bit, but I don't know how to disable Trim on NVMe.

5. Follow the Idiot's Guide To iMessage. It works and it will guide you through the process of creating serial, board serial, and UUID. These are needed for other things such as working App Store, etc.

6. There is no app that helps with the setup of USB with a nice GUI that I'm aware of. You can try this new guide. It might be a bit easier for you to follow.

7. This guide shows How to Enable or Disable Automatic Updates on Mac.

8. Whether or not you should overclock is up to you. Personally, I would recommend getting everything else work correctly first. Then run the system for a while without an overclock to make sure everything is stable before attempting an overclock.

The Noctua NH-D15 should be perfectly adequate for some overclocking.

To get your RAM running at the advertised speed, enable XMP in BIOS.

9. The Vega fan issue only affects some Vegas. It sounds like your Vega is not affected. You can check the fan speeds when the computer is idle using the following terminal command:
Code:
ioreg -l |grep \"PerformanceStatistics\" | cut -d '{' -f 2 | tr '|' ',' | tr -d '}' | tr ',' '\n'|grep 'Temp\|Fan'

boot in verbose mod ( -v or enable on clover) and see what its happening ...what is long time to boot

How do I do that? I read about it but don't know where to set the parameter, since it directly boots when selecting the drive.

4. It takes approx 30 seconds for me to boot from my 970 EVO. I think that disabling Trim may speed it up a bit, but I don't know how to disable Trim on NVMe.

For what I've read, it's not possible. M2 NVMe disks have it enabled always. Can't be disabled. Maybe it's hardware related? Who knows.

5. Follow the Idiot's Guide To iMessage. It works and it will guide you through the process of creating serial, board serial, and UUID. These are needed for other things such as working App Store, etc.

Thanks I'll check it, I see now it's in your main post too... I missed it. Are you sure on the app store thing though? I downloaded Blackmagic Speedtest to test the disks out. Maybe it only works with already owned apps?

6. There is no app that helps with the setup of USB with a nice GUI that I'm aware of. You can try this new guide. It might be a bit easier for you to follow.

I'll try it, thanks! What I meant with the UI though, is an app that allows to check stuff that then clover puts in the config.plist (I think).

Great!!

Makes sense yes, I'll do that. Also keep CCC images of working stages. I see that's very important in Hackintoshes. As for the RAM, I'll try it out, although in my windows rig it didn't work, ram didn't manage to go past BIOS post. :(

Yeah, I tried that and it shows 0rpm (not true, I looked and they were spinning) but 35% speed. But since they were spinning and it showed 0rpm... I didn't know if I could trust it.

Thank you very much, I can't wait to edit with this beast and compare times in FCPX. I tried a windows workstation but can't put up with Premier. It's so slow and bad optimised when compared to mac... oh god.

hi @pastrychef. I am using your EFI for Intel UHD630 r3.5 on my 10.13.6 system. Everything is working great except graphic. I had DELL P2715Q 4k monitor and worked great in 1080p HiDPI before replacing the EFI. but after that, I only got blurry 2560x1400 :(. I tried many ways but no luck. Note that if I changed the IntelGFX to 0x12345678 and delete ig-platform-id I will get 1080p HiDPI but got flicking(Intel UHD Graphics 630 31MB). Unfortunately, I didn't back up the EFI :(... any hints? Thanks a lot!!!!

Yes, there are some issues with IGPU with the latest Lilu and WhateverGreen. If you want, you can downgrade to r3.5 of the EFI folder. You can find r3.5 of the EFI folder in post #1. Or, you can upgrade macOS to High Sierra 17G2112. You can find links to all relevant info in post #1>Latest update near the bottom of the post.

Yes, I don't know how to disable Trim on NVMe nor have I ever tried. I rarely reboot so 30 second boot time is not an issue for me. If you want, you can can try using HFS+ rather than APFS which supposedly speeds things up...

I don't know why you would want to run without serial, board serial, and UUID. It can only cause problems and setting them up is not hard at all. It's your choice if you want to set them up.

You can use Clover Configurator which gives you a UI to see changes in your config.plist.

It sounds like your Vega 64 uses a non-reference cooler. In this case, you will have to rely on the video card's firmware to handle fan control.
