I am using an Asus Maximus IX Hero which apparently uses ALC1220. I used VoodooHDA which didn't seem to work. Is there a kext or other solutions that would enable the on-board audio of my mobo on a El Capitan installation?

This was solved by going with an older version of VoodooHDA 2.8.8. I forgot how much noise and interference there is on PC's though, will probably go for a usb audio solution for this one.

Voodoo is not mentioned in the linked thread

No, but thanks for sharing. Are you saying the audio quality would be clean with that solution. Sounds more like hardware interference to me, not something solved with software...

Hi there.

Just a quick thought on this. As far as I can recall from my own experiments a while back, the VooDoo kexts did give me noise on the output. The correct RealTek one with AppleHDA patches didn't.

My own onboard audio is the same - ALC1220 - and I get no noise (well, to my old ears that have been to too many rock concerts over the years!)

Glad you got sound working but it might just be worth removing the VooDoo kext and using MultiBeast to install its ALC1220 option. Check your HDEF patch as per @toleda 's link above and also put @RehabMan 's FakePCIID and FakePCIID_Intel_HDMI_Audio kexts in your EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other folder (Yes, I know you're not using Intel audio but go with it ).

The only other problem is the output port map. I'm not using ASUS but Gigabyte and the port spec is Audio ID = 2.

Good luck!
:)

Actually it's a fair point because I can see HDMI Audio but its disabled/no audio. FakePCIID_Intel_HDMI_Audio would be an alternative to try because in my case is indeed through the Intel HD 630. @toleda 's guide looks awesome but it looks long and complex....maybe lazy of me.

MultiBeast for El Capitan hasn't been a great experience, the only piece of the puzzle that breaks even the USB aided boot which I am still relying on unfortunately.

But will give FakePCIID_Intel_HDMI_Audio a go first and if all else fails will be all over @toleda 's guide :)

@toleda I'm I right in thinking your solution is for Sierra? I'm using El Capitan...

FakePCIID and FakePCIID_Intel_HDMI_Audio kexts
Only required for Kaby Lake audio is Sierra., unnecessary in Hugh Sierra.
the port spec is Audio ID = 2.
Audio ID: 1 - 5 or 6 motherboard audio ports
Audio ID: 2 - 3 motherboard audio ports (2 inputs repurposed to outputs)

Both Moog84 Kaby Lake Hero and your Kaby Lake Gaming K3 have 5 audio ports, use Audio ID: 1

Not correct, 10.8 through 10.13 are fully supported.
I'm using El Capitan...
Bad choice. 10.11 has no idea what is in the Kaby Lake chip set. Only 10.13 supports the Kaby Lake chip set. On board audio will not work in any version of 10.11. An AppleHDA patch is required for Kaby Lake audio on 10.12.4, .5 and .6.

A bigger system issue is no CPU/GPU power management if the OS has no clue on what hardware it is running.
