Hi all,
Finished my first PC build and my first mod. Used one of my old powermac G5's. Great fun to discover the whole community of G5 modifiers, wasn't aware there was this recycling movement going on! Have several more G5's waiting. Will be using this computer for heavy 3D rendering tasks and some gaming. My whole studio migrated to Windows 10 after a bunch of Apples got stolen two years ago! The Dark Rock is kind of huge but fits exactly. Next time I would look into fitting water cooling radiator and fans in the bottom. The Dark Rock is so big it's a pain to acces memory or change CPU, you really have to remove the entire board to change memory or CPU, however it is absolutely silent! So will see how it goes in the long run. The kit from Laser Hive works quite well. Lasered a custom fan holder for the front panel for 2*140 fans. Mind you I am not even trying to run Hackintosh, totally migrated to Windows. No need for many drives as I use a server but there is plenty of space left to upgrade. Right now the air flow from front to back seems to be really smooth and efficient.
Parts list:
i7-6800K
Intel Asus X99-A II
Corsair 64 GB DDR4-3333 Quad-Kit
Crucial MX300, 525 GB SSD
2 EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
Corsair Air Series SP120Q Quiet Edition, Case fan
Corsair Air Series SP140 LED High Static Pressure Edition, Case fan
Laser hive: G5 Full ATX plus power supply support, https://www.thelaserhive.com/product/g5-atx-kit-psu-holder/
New DVD drive
1Tb Hard drive Hitachi
Power button connector: http://g5atxcables.weebly.com
Conclusions
If had to build again I would do things a bit differently:
- i7-6850K instead of the i7-6800 would have been a better match to the two GTX's thanks to 40 lanes instead of 28 and the price difference on such an investment is not so big.
- Would not try MSI X99 SLI Plus again, the ASUS X99 AII was a better experience on all levels.
- DDR4-3333 Mhrz speed supported by board but not the PCU, I found this out once bought. It's overkill, interestingly there does not seem to be any CPU's that support this kind of RAM Speed? Any information?
- Noise level of the SP140 fans in front needed optimisation in the BIOS.
- The Dark Rock Pro is kind of bulky and requires entire MOBO to be removed to acces memory and PCU. On the other hand it is dead Quiet... so would have to reevaluate against water cooling.
Let me know what you think. Any advice to take into account for next MOD very welcome.
Overclocking added a 30% speed structurally. Great!
Last step attaching the on/off switch and cleaning up cabling management further.
Tried with the MSI X99 SLI Plus but not successful, to many problems with Bios update.
The ASUS X99 A II is great to work with. BIOS and error code indications are wonderful.
First run! What a relief to see it working after all the problems with the MSI MOBO
