The original installation media for Mac OS X Snow Leopard was a 10.6 DVD. The DVD was only updated once to version 10.6.3. In order to provide more frequent updates to users, Apple is now slipstreaming the latest version of OS X directly into the download. Upon fresh installation, no updating is necessary!

If you purchased Mountain Lion from the App Store prior to September 12, 2013, you most likely have 10.8.0, 10.8.1, 10.8.2, 10.8.3, or 10.8.4. To re-download Mountain Lion and update your App to 10.8.5, simply log into the Mac App Store and click Update. When the download finishes, the app will automatically open. The updated 10.8.5 Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion App can be found in the Applications folder. You can then re-create your UniBeast installation USB.

If you don't see the Update button, follow this simple procedure.

1. Delete your existing copy of Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion.app from the Applications folder and any other folder on your system.
2. Hold down the alt/option key on your keyboard, and click the App Store icon.
3. With alt/option key held, click on Purchased
4. With alt/option key held, click on OS X Mountain Lion
5. With alt/option key held, click on Install

If neither of the above processes work for you, try creating a new User account. You can delete it later.

1. Open System Preferences
2. Click on Accounts
3. Click Lock Icon
4. Click (+) to add a new User
5. Create a new Admin User
6. Log out, and log into new User
7. Proceed with steps above.

Haswell-based system owners beware - 10.8.5 is not compatible out of the box.

Article: Update Your OS X Mountain Lion App to 10.8.5

I have had enough of these minor updates that cause so much consternation and distress. Let us just have Mac OS XI with parallel functional programming now.

As a result of carefully following the instructions to update to 10.8.5 I could no longer boot. I did a partial restore - system folder only. As a result of that, my encrypted Time Machine drive refuses to recognise its password (it does when I boot from USB!!!) so I have lost easy access to backups. Without backups, I can no longer risk experimenting with another 10.8.5 update.

For the moment I am stuck and not in a safe place.

When there is more shared knowledge available for Haswell-based systems, I will go the extra mile and try the whole lot again. My position is further complicated by the burden of having to deal with Core Storage (Fusion Drive and encrypted Time Machine) which requires several things copying from the logical volumes to the hidden boot partitions of every physical partition just to attempt a boot.

The answer is binary: boot or no boot. So far it has been no boot. 10.8.5 has been an unmitigated disaster for my Haswell system. So I am running nervously on a partially restored, unsupported custom 10.8.4 and longing for the days of OS 7 and 8 when none of this was possible or necessary.

OS 7, 8 or XI but not 10.8.5!

I created a UniBeast installation USB, then attempted to install on an GA-Z87X-UD4H + i7 4770k. I did not run Haswell Helper. Kernel panic when attempting to boot the USB due to GenericUSBXHCI.kext, so I tried removing from /Volumes/USB/Extras/Extensions. Was able to boot and start the install, but "An error occurred while installing OS X." a minute or two into the install. My USB mouse was also barely functional in the installer, so was able to open install.log, but couldn't scroll. Errors I could see where StreamProcessor.c pread failed, returning errno 22.

I'll try re-downloading and creating a new UniBeast USB, since this error can be a corrupt installer. However, has anyone had success yet with a clean install on a Haswell, or I should wait for an update to UniBeast and/or Haswell Helper?

Yes you did the right thing. Haswell doesn't support GenericUSBXHCI.kext. Remove after the UniBeast USB is created.

MacMan and I will be releasing a new UniBeast and MultiBeast in the next few days, which should alleviate many of the issues people are having with 10.8.5 + UniBeast 2.0.2
