The FireWire 800/400 card to own for 100% compatibility

Well, I hope you're aware that all Z68 UEFI releases are currently in Beta and are not final releases.
This could be part of your problem, but it's odd that something like a FireWire card would have such a big effect.
I have to admit that the card I've used, that works perfectly in my mates machine, is in an older P55 system.
There's no logical reason to what you've experienced, beyond the fact that you're using a Beta UEFI and you might want to considering flashing back to the most recent BIOS (which means back to a DSDT) to see if that helps at all.

What problems did you have with the Syba card? And does the new card have the same issues (beyond the sleep/reboot issues)?

Hi again -

Yes, as I'd mentioned, I'm aware that I'm on the "bleeding edge" a bit here in using the UEFI bios AND 10.8. I can't seem to help myself. :) I also have a habit of tweaking a working system into a tangled, non-working mess. :) But I'm curious, and I'm learning, and I do appreciate your work here and all your contributions to the site.

The Syba card also had a sleep-related issue: I lost the ability to wake from sleep when it was installed (system would power up but be unresponsive, and monitor would remain without signal). I also had a few unexplained KPs and system freezes that may have been related. Now, I regret not taking a close look at the logs to see what the problem was. I'm slowly becoming a better troubleshooter, but it's a slow and painful process...

For fun today I did a manual CMOS reset and reinstalled the card (no change). I also tried the MacPro 5,1 definition for kicks - reinstalled card, no change.

Since I'm dual booting Windows, tried that as well - and I am able to sleep and shut down properly under Windows 7 Home Pro. So maybe it's not the BIOS itself, but some issue between the BIOS and OS X trying to run without a DSDT on the beta bios.

I don't seem to be getting the same craziness that I was getting last night with boot looping / BIOS problems, but the basic symptoms remain the same: on this build, when I install the card, I can't convince the machine to stay asleep (sleeps, then wakes immediately) and I also cannot shut the machine down (it acts like it's shutting down but then reboots).

I don't post this experience to be contrary - as you noted, I've got some "experimental" elements to my build - but I did want to encourage caution for those with similar setups considering moving to this card.

As far as troubleshooting goes, I would be happy to try anything you suggest, even going so far as to mail you the card for testing if you think that would be helpful. Thanks again for all you do here on this site!

I'll ask my mate if I can borrow his card and do some testing here, as I have a similar system to your set up for test, but it might take a few days. That said, as I don't have exactly the same board and the fact that Gigabyte appears to have several releases for some boards and only one for others... things are a bit messy and it could be part of the reason.

The fact that you had problems with both the new card (the topic of this thread) AND the Syba card tells me the problem is not with either of the cards & something altogether different. I've even had a couple other FW cards that haven't been recommended Belkin & Sonnet) in my hack & NEITHER gave the kinds of problems you've experienced. Being on the bleeding edge, while good fun & great learning does have its drawbacks. ;-)

I agree with you there, BoomR. :)

What's interesting to me is that, while PCI Fireward cards in general are known for mucking up sleep, there is so little information to go on in console.log or checking sleep/wake assertions in terminal. When it goes to sleep and comes to life again, console/log reports:

Reason for wake: ?

LOL! That's helpful, eh?

I would roll back to F12 but as I learned in switching to the UEFI BIOS, your MB serial # is reassigned and therefore requires a new iTunes authorization to view purchased materials. You can do a clean sweep of your iTunes authorizations...once a year. I don't relish the idea of begging for an extra authorization wipe now, and yet another when the BIOS leaves beta...

So, I'll simply continue to watch on this one and see if others come forward with similar problems - or if 10.8.1 or the non-beta UEFI clears things up. Or...thelostswede swings in with a scimitar clenched between his teeth to save the day! :D

I'll get the card off my mate next week to do some testing.
He's using an older P55 system, but doesn't have any of the issues you have.
Admittedly he's on 10.7.4 still, but I doubt this is a specific issue to 10.8.
He had problems powering off his system, but following my guide from a few days ago, he's not getting his system to power off correctly, but that's a slightly different matter.

Here are my logs from startup to a manual sleep request, and the subsequent wake. At least it's giving a reason now
pmset -g assertions shows 0 items affecting sleep. :(

Posted in two parts due to message length issues. THANK YOU for any time and help you can provide.

This is running Multibeast 5.0.1 today to make sure all my kexts, etc. are up to date. :)

THANK YOU for your time and help, and any suggestions you may have.

Thelostswede, I can now confirm identical behavior under Windows 7, and under device manage I don't see anything obvious that I could toggle to prevent the card from reawakening on sleep, or rebooting under shutdown.

Therefore -- in the words of a famous shepherd, I'm going to get the flock out of here!

I'm either looking at hardware issues or something specific to the U1H BIOS - I will post a separate troubleshooting thread. Sorry for derailing your thread here.
