Theres a lot more cases on the market like this now. Ive got a case with the same layout as yours people seem to think that its bad for heat pipes on certain motherboards but i think thats a pure myth.

My setup is working perfectly fine so far besides the fact that I can't seem to get dual boot w/ win10 but it works when I boot that drive first instead of using the clover boot loader. I guess I can live with it for now. Also sleep and shut down seems to just restart my set up for some odd reason. It goes to sleep on its own just fine though.

Its an inverted mount which is actually better for your PCIe cards. With inverted cases the GFX cards face up so heat moves up and away from the components where regular cases have them upside down with the heat rising into the chips themselves making heat dissipation harder.
Hi, PJ, long time no talk to.

In this case (Silverstone SST-PS07B), the graphics card is at the top with the fans facing down. This results in the graphics card fans blowing into the airflow from the front to the back of the case. Thus, while maybe disrupting the flow front to back, the front fan is large enough to keep the airflow steady from front to back.

The case does have a place for a 120mm rear fan attachment, and the rear of the top of the case does have compartment with a 120mm fan exit for liquid cooling apparatus. However, both the front fan and the graphics card fans are so quiet most of the time that I can't tell if they running which goes to show you that I have yet to tax this system.

So i also bought this Board and got it running very well.
I also use the Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB SSD as Boot Drive and it works great, but a lot of times while shutting down it just reboots and Osx boots into this Message:

Seems to be the NVMe Driver, which i have put into the Clover/kexts/10.11/ directory on the EFI partition. Does it need to go anywhere else? I tried /Library/Extensions but OSX failed to boot with Still waiting for root device

I, too, occasionally get the reboot. I just use the case's power switch to shut it down. Then, upon boot up next time, I get a OS X error as it boots up; I tap the keyboard's spacebar, and it boots into the Desktop as normal. So, I think it's part of the booting with the M.2 NVMe kext. Unfortunately, not too much we can do about it until Apple supports NVMe.

Hi Stork! I have a question for you but for beginning I want to say that you have all my respect!
I have the same motherboard like you but with different processor and graphic board like below:
Mobo ASUS Maximus VIII GENE
CPU Intel Skylake, Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz
Graphics GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 Xtreme Gaming 4GB DDR5 256-bit

Do you think it'll work if I will follow the same steps like you?
Or where I should be more careful?

Thank you!

narcys-ray,

Welcome to the Forum! The good is that you can use my guide for your system.  Same motherboard. Close enough on the processor. And, the GTX 970 is an older, kissing cousin to my GTX 950, both requiring the Nvidia web drivers.

Hi Stork! Thanks for such an amazing write up! I'm thinking of the following build for editing in FCPX, do you mind if I ask your thoughts?

Case: BitFenix Phenom mATX
MOBO: Asus Maximus VIII Gene
PSU: Corsair AX 760
Processor: i7 6700k
Cooler: Corsair H60 (water cooled)
RAM: 16gb Corsair Vengence
Bootdisk / HD: Samsung 950 PRO 512
GPU: AMD R9 280x
Monitor: LG 27inch IPS 4K

Couple things I'm concerned about:
I've read that the integrated graphics of the 6700k aren't supported yet—does this mean I will have to output to my monitor through my GPU? It seems that the card I'm considering supports up to 4096 x 2160 through display port. Will running a 4k display through a graphics card stress the graphics card so much that it doesn't perform well in FCPX?

Additionally, I live in Japan, and the outlets here are all two pin, vs. three pin like the states. Additionally, the voltage is 100, vs 110/120 in the states. Do you know if this will affect the power supply or system in general? Any tips or things I should know?

Thank you very much for your time! Really excited to see the Samsung finally working!

The Integrated Graphics is kinda crappy, if I can use that description, but will get better once Apple makes an computer with Skylake processor. So, we're in a "hurry up and wait" state.

I just updated my Mac Pro 5,1 with a flashed (with EFI VBIOS for Macs) Gigabyte R9 280X in anticipation of prices dropping in 4K/5K monitors this year. So, the 280X is a good choice as it's equivalent to a GTX 680 & GTX 770 according to the Tom's Hardware's Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart. The trick with the 280X in a hack is that it needs to have the port layout of the 280X AMD Reference Design which, IIRC, is one DVI, two mDP and a HDMI ports. Otherwise, it probably won't work. Check out Fl0rian's great guide for AMD cards in the Graphics forum section > http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/171291-radeon-compatibility-guide-ati-amd-graphics-cards.html.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with your electrical power outlet differences. I suggest you ask a local computer or hardware store. You'll probably need an adapter that can handle the PSU's wattage.

Make sure your memory is on ASUS's memory support list. I thought my Corsair LPX memory was on the list, but I recheck, after I couldn't get the GENE to use the memory with the BIOS set to use the X.M.P., and it wasn't on the list. However, I get it working with some tweaking one of these days. In the meantime, the memory is running at 2133 MHz.

I noticed that you are considering using the Corsair H60 processor cooler. Why are using a water cooler? (BTW, Tom's Hardware just recently reviewed the top of the line air processor coolers.) IMO, water coolers are not necessary for any computer use except for extreme overclocking. I've found that a good air cooler will work fine with anything I can throw at it. However, I must admit that I'm using a Thermaltake Water2.0 Performer sealed water cooler on my Thunderball system, which MacMan recommended. If he hadn't recommended it, I would have used just an air cooler as I've never taxed any of my systems with my video rendering tasks. If you still want to use a water processor cooler, take a look at the Thermaltake Water3.0 Performer (newer model of the Thermaltake).

Good luck with your build! ...and a belated welcome to the Forum.
