I've tested one of these Archer T2U usb wifi adapters on a Catalina desktop and the speeds were very good. The large 5dBi high-gain antenna makes a big difference in download speeds. So if a large antenna isn't a problem for a laptop these are a great deal at $16.99 right now.

Note there is a separate driver for 10.9-10.14 so don't use the Catalina version for Mojave.
