Hi guys- my Z87X-OC/[email protected]/32gb system just rocks but I haven't added video yet, and I'm tired of the low performing HD4600 graphics. I never found the love for Yosemite, so I'm still happily on Mavericks.

Was hoping for advice for the best bang-per-buck Nvidia card for this setup. I find many posts about the GTX660 working fine out of the box, and I also see items re the 960 but unsure if it will run on Mavericks.

Are there any 660 or 960 cards to avoid for some reason? Is there maybe a 700-something card that might be a better choice?

I'd like to find a used card for $100-150 at the most I think. Not a gamer but I do lots of other graphics-related work and could really get jazzed if I can smooth out the displays... it's just too jumpy sometimes.

tks

The nVidia 900 series graphics cards can only run with nVidia's Web (and, optionally, CUDA) drivers which are only supported in Yosemite.

However, I'm having great luck with the GTX 650 Ti and GTX 760 graphics cards. You can find them on eBay reasonably priced and they work OOB with 10.8.5 and greater.

On eBay, the GTX 650 Ti is going for $50-$75 USD, and 760's go for $115-$160.

Since the above cards come in different configurations, make sure you get one with the nVidia Reference Design monitor port layout because that's what Apple used for their drivers.
