I kept running into the install failed message like some. Here's what finally solved it for me:
1. Ran check and repair on my OS disc
Sure enough, there were lots of permissions issues but even this was not solving the problem. Apparently you have to reboot after the repair and then try again, just running repair and then trying kept failing but once I restarted it finally installed.
I also did the following which may have helped -
Set BIOS to load optimized defaults, then re-set the AHCI mode.
(My prior BIOS settings worked w/ the old OS but this solved a frustrating issue where my comp kept restarting itself at the load screen on boot. I still had to use the USB drive to boot but before doing this I could not reboot into ML after the OS update.
Unplug all other USB drives and firewire drives.
This was also affecting my ability to boot into the pre-multibeast setup / post OS update state.
Now I just need to fix my mouse issues - left click doesn't want to work intermittently even after USB kexts. I'm thinking I'll have to do that old fix where you delete a certain kext again.
