iJanni´s Silent Build - GA Z77 DS3H - i3 2100 - NVidia GeForce 210

Hi iJanni and Stork,

I solved my problems. I had to edit the boot.plist to include the resolution specs and now it is displaying properly through DVI-D. The onboard Intel graphics card works great just as the CustoMac link indicated.

I also solved the boot problem (which i had no idea how and why), but what i did was buying a SATA HD 320Gb, and installed ML on it. For some odd reason my previous 1TB Hitachi HD was having kernel panic and wouldn't boot at all. Apart from that, i also installed Windows XP just so that i could upgrade the BIOS to the latest from Gigabyte's website. (Had no idea how to upgrade BIOS while having ML installed)

Now everything is working: audio, video, LAN, wifi, sleep, and the rest.

Thanks for sharing your build with us, really appreciate your efforts. :)

Hey,
nice to hear that ;)
As you can read in my updated build description, sleep isn´t working for me (anymore). I´ve installed the newest version of ML (10.8.2 with incremental updates) and the F9 bios. So it´s the same setup as you have.
Maybe something went wrong in my boot.plist?
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
	<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
	<key>GenerateCStates</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
	<key>GeneratePStates</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
	<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
	<key>Kernel</key>
	<string>mach_kernel</string>
	<key>Kernel Flags</key>
	<string>darkwake=0</string>
	<key>Legacy Logo</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
	<key>Timeout</key>
	<string>2</string>
	<key>UseKernelCache</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
       <key>Default Partition</key>
       <string>hd(0,1)</string>
       <key>Quiet Boot</key>
       <string>Yes</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Would be nice if you could help me out :p

There're several things to do:

Just remove this string:

<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>2</string>

You're using quiet boot. That means you're booting direct into OSX without the option to choose a different OS or to enter flags. Therefore ML boots faster. Right now it's like choosing and direct booting at the same time. Either Legacy Logo or quiet boot but not both.

Another option to try is darkwake=12 (instead of darkwake=0) to get sleep working.

You also don't need

<key>Default Partition</key>
<string>hd(0,1)</string>

Chimera boots automatically the right drive where ML is installed.

So I would suggest to use the following settings:

<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GenerateCStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GeneratePStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>darkwake=12</string>
<key>UseKernelCache</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Quiet Boot</key>
<string>Yes</string>

I think Heberer's recommendation could make it work.

You can take a look at my plist. Exact copy of it and everything works for me.

The only issue i do not like but can tolerate is the slow boot time, i don't know if there is something i can do to make it boot more quickly without risking my current boot. Is that what quiet boot does? To boot faster?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GenerateCStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GeneratePStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1680x1050x32</string>
<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>darkwake=0</string>
<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>2</string>
<key>UseKernelCache</key>
<string>Yes</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Yes with quiet boot you will win 2 seconds. Just try it, you won't face any problems.

Remove:
<key>Legacy Logo</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Timeout</key>
<string>2</string>

and replace it with

<key>Quiet Boot</key>
<string>Yes</string>

This option:
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1680x1050x32</string>

you don't need if your GPU is recognized oob or you want to have a boot screen which suits your monitor (I guess it's only a cosmetic matter).

Huberer, thanks a lot, i did what you suggested and
lost two seconds and the tonymacx86 screen (which is Legacy Logo i assume).

Also the graphic resolution mode string is erased. I was worried at first because prior to have the resolution mode string, i couldn't get my internal graphic to display properly. But now even it is gone, it still displays the same resolution.

You rock! Thank u! Learnt something new every time i am here in the forum.

:D

So I would suggest to use the following settings:

<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GenerateCStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GeneratePStates</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Kernel</key>
<string>mach_kernel</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>darkwake=12</string>
<key>UseKernelCache</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Quiet Boot</key>
<string>Yes</string>

Huberer

Thanks mate for your recommendation. It´s still booting directly into OS X but sleep still isn´t working correctly. It goes to sleep and directly wakes up. Same when going to auto sleep :(

Also the graphic resolution mode string is erased. I was worried at first because prior to have the resolution mode string, i couldn't get my internal graphic to display properly. But now even it is gone, it still displays the same resolution.

As far as i know the graphic resolution string is for setting the right resolution for your boot up screen ;) No need for it when you´re in OS X...

@ saganian1

Good to hear that is working. If you want to increase booting time than I would suggest buying a SSD and using the HDD as data drive. This is a very big boost in booting.

@iJanni

Which GPU do you use? The 210 Geforce or the ATI one? Do you also use other PCIe-cards (like firewire, lan,..)?

My current GPU is the Gigabyte ATI HD 6870 OC ;) I haven´t installed any other PCI-e card.

So in that case you have to change some settings in your boot.plist. As I don't use any ATI-GPU I can't help you in that case. Just look around in the forum what others use as settings for this GPU. Sorry for that.
