Hello Hackintoshers,

I paid $475 for my HP Probook 4530s with Intel i5, 8g ram, 500HDD, 15" screen. (From EBAY, USED)

How much did you pay for yours and what specs?

I paid $379 for a brand new ProBook 4530s (XU015UT) with i3-2310M/4GB RAM/320GB HDD from www.circuitcity.com (I think it was a mistake because about 30 minutes after I ordered it, the "sale" price went up to $429).

FWIW, I've since upgraded it to 8 GB RAM ($49) and an i7-2670QM CPU (used - $150). Ended up with a pretty hot i7 laptop for only $575.

Now contemplating a display upgrade to 1080p (~$85).

You can upgrade the CPU and graphics in these? I've got two old HP Probook 4520s that we use for casual web browsing. I'd like to know more about what kind of things I can upgrade in these. Can you suggest a site with info?

Go to the http://support.hp.com website and do a search for the Maintenance and Service Guide for your model. It will give you an idea of how much RAM, and what kind of HDDs and CPUs that your system will support as well as instructions on removal/replacement of most parts.

FYI...I'm not familiar with the 4520s, but upgrading the CPU on the 4530s is not for the faint-of-heart. You have to practically disassemble the entire machine to get to the CPU. RAM and HDD upgrades are very easy as both are accessible by just removing the bottom cover. Display upgrades require a good bit of disassembly, too.

I'm assuming that was used? Otherwise that was over $200 cheaper than me. (mine's new) same specs as yours.

Thanks, I'll look into it. I've had both my Probooks mostly apart to replace hard disks, keyboards, screens and optical drives, but I wasn't aware you could just swap an i7 into an i5 model. Ours are i3 models and it would be nice to get some extra horsepower.

I paid 452 bucks for an Open Box 2330M 4G, 500G
110 for OCZ 120G
113 for 1080P screen
30 for the screen cable
220 from eBay for an used i7-2760QM
46 for 8G 1600 Kinston Memory
20 for the wifi card
Total 991 dollars.

Sold old screen on eBay for 50
Sold HD on eBay for 50

Total I paid 891 dollars.

Still trying to sell the i3 CPU. may get 50 dollars back.

Wow. Did you sell the screen fast on Ebay? Or did it take a while to get it sold? That dropped the price of the 1080p screen to ~50. I would definitely buy thee 1080p screen if I was sure I would be able to sell the old screen for at least $40.
