Gigabyte Z690 Aero G + i5-12600K + AMD RX 6800 XT

I don't want to jinx the system by saying this, but I was eagerly waiting for someone to give this build a real-world shake down in a professional setting.

You may be the first to boldly go where no one has gone before! :)
As previously stated,

"After 6 days of continuous use, @CaseySJ’s Z690 system is production ready!
Our facility operates 24/7 and we have administered a royal spanking on this particular Z690 build
."

That, dear Sir is exactly what I am inferring.

This system has completed one, and is presently involved in a second full production.

Existing NDA stipulations prevent further explanations.

Tony..

The DDR4 running with XMP is a known issue on all Gigabyte Z690 motherboards. There have been many reported cases over at overclock.net forum on various Gigabyte Z690 boards failed to POST when XMP is active. They even issue warnings to users to avoid all Gigabyte boards until they're fixed. This is also why I'm now leaning towards other brand for my upcoming build.

My XMP works for G-Skill 4x16GB 3600MHz CL16. I did manually enable the system agent voltage to 1.15V (can’t recall if I actually needed this for xmp to boot).

I think that we still lose almost half the performance . Adler Lake is amazing but not for macOS (
So very inspiring build and hopefully not the final version.

Good to know at least some DDR4 works well with XMP. I am planning to get G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB F4-3600C16D-32GVKC (16GB x 2). By looking at the part numbers, I think they utilitze the exact same sticks. One bundles in a pack of 2, the other in a pack of 4.

We have addressed this already and concluded that Alder Lake easily makes a lot of sense for macOS both in terms of performance and price. If you search this thread and the latter parts of the Alder Lake thread you’ll find the reasoning.

Since a few people have trouble with XMP settings, I want to give a warning that the Gigabyte Z690 AERO G BIOS has a setting called something like "enable warning if memory is not placed in the optimized slot." If you enable this, it will continuously give you this warning no matter what slot or RAM combination is used. In fact the warning shows that you should be using memory slot A1/B1 but the manual actually says A2/B2 for dual modules. I tried putting it in A1/B1 and the memory warning still doesn't go away. The annoying thing is that it will just auto shut down the system after the warning and won't give you a chance to go to the BIOS to disable the warning. The only way I could get the system to boot again is to reset my BIOS.

I just tried the following experiment successfully:
  • RX 6800 XT --> HDMI --> LG 1080p monitor
  • RX 6800 XT --> DisplayPort --> Asus 4K monitor
Both monitors woke up properly from sleep. This test was conducted with Monterey 12.1 Beta 3 with MSI RX 6800 XT Gaming X Trio.

I can finally reproduce the sleep wake issue. It's related to using SwitchResX . If I disable my 2nd monitor using switchesX then waking from sleep will encounter the black screen issue. If I leave both monitors default as enabled then it will wake just fine. I still don't understand why Apple doesn't implement native method for disabling the 2nd display so I don't have to rely on switchresX!

Following the developments here with great interest! Used a 3770 i7 system for my photo processing for many years and looking for an update. Is there any progress on spoofing the igpu in alderlake series? Otherwise, what would be a good choice for a low-cost video card?

It's a completely different iGPU so spoofing won't work, and support from Apple will not come. Monterey no longer supports nVidia GPU; your best option with Z690 is to find a Polaris GPU (460/560/470/570/480/580) for a reasonable (or at least acceptable) price.
Otherwise, you could get a Z490 board (NOT Z590) and a 10th generation CPU with an iGPU: This is the last supported iGPU, and still a worthy upgrade over your Core2Duo or i7-3770.

Exactly.
Considering the comparable prices of the RX580 and RX6600, I think it's better to go with the RX6600.
