Thanks, linw! Your advice on using the usb kext saved my bacon for the day. I'm having a tough time getting my LaCie Rugged to work. It apparently only works via usb, and only when I don't have a usb hub plugged in elsewhere. Activating the rest of my usb ports obviated the need to tie up half of my ports with a single drive.

Sadly, I can't connect it via the firewire 400 port on my board (though other drives work there) and my new SIIG FW 800 PCI is not working either. Hopefully I can figure those out one of these days.

Let me say I'm stunned. TI Firewire support is implemented right into Mac OS X.

I'm using the F12 DSDT and Firewire is working fine here.
