Hi everyone, I'm preparing a build for a friend who needs a powerful mac pro mainly for video work (editing 4k on adobe premiere, live visuals on Touch Designer and Max/MSP). I have built numerous PC configs myself in the past, but this would be my first hackintosh. I'm here to check if there are any inconsistencies and / or errors in the choice of components. First of all, I know the 8700k isn't officially supported so I'm aware it's not gonna be easy, but I've seen two successful builds here and one on ****** so I guess it's worth the shot (the config must be maxed out and stand the test of time). Also, my guess is that the combo 8700k / Z370A will be officially supported in the next few weeks, so I checked with my friend and we agreed that as a worst case scenario, he would be ok to fall back on windows in the meantime. If any of you has suggestions, they will be gladly taken into account before buying. Thanks ! :)

Here's the config :

370s systems are not well tested yet so you would need to struggle a bit. even apple do not use z370 so why would you?

Is there any other chipset that can handle the 8700k ? That's the main reason, this computer has to be a beast.

Nope, z3xx is required for Coffee Lake.

Also a beast would be 64GB RAM specially for the person you're making this for and it's said prices will stabilize in 2018 because so far 64GB is about $700 so it would also be good to wait another 6 months or so.

Also a 1080ti would be better instead of the 1080, and if it's about shaving prices, then 750W is not required for a 1080 (I run 650 on a 1080ti and even so I could run a 550).

Also may consider a "Mac Wifi Card" instead of a TPLink for full mac support, you can have some for $50 or buy an expensive one from OSXWifi for $120. Check the network forum for more info, there is a long topic about those cards.

Hi Leokaba

Im preparing almost the same hackingtosh build as you. I've researched a lot on Asus mobos and would warn bying the asus prime Z370A, if you want to overclock later - (the i7 8700k is easily overclocked to speeds between 4,8 - 5,0) about 30% more speed.
The prime should not be able to overclock that good and the Rog strix z370F or E is said to have a bios (load line calibration) error,
making the overclock difficult. if you want to overclock later I would recommend the maximus x hero. Ive only red good things about it, and I've found a post on ****** with a succesfull hackingtosh build with that board.

https://www.******.com/r/hackintosh/comments/79cdce/8700k_on_1013_benchmark_results/

Otherwise stick with the prime and buy the i7 8700 (no k) its cheaper and cannot overclock.
The rest of your build looks good (for what I know and have red)

I wish the guy would post a guide for his build, because I think it most be a monster machine, and my guess is that it
out performs the current Mac Pro, which is much, much more expensive.
I hope you and anybody with luck with the i7 8700 and z370 would share there method and drivers here.
Good luck, and keep us postet with thoughts and progress.

Andy

Thanks for the heads-up, we will take those advice into account :)

Oh that's a bad news, we chose the prime because it was the only one with thunderbolt support... Any advice on other mobos that would support thunderbolt AND overclocking with the 8700k ?

I had to come to terms with not having thunderbolt on the motherboard when I realized I was never going to get a UD5, but that's why there's expansion cards I guess.

I'm thinking on making the same kind of build, but with 8700 (no k) and MSI Z370-A PRO, no overclocking.
Do you guys think it will work?
Also does it worth waiting for the nvidia volta series? which are expected in early 2018?

From what Ive read on newegg and the inter webs is that there is a lot of price gouging going on at the moment. I wanted to try out the 8700K but Intel gave a limited release until next year. I have a z68 mobo with 2x970 NIv Pretty great for gaming on the PC side still. So I will wait a bit.

Very good choice. No one should pay over $400 for the 8700K. Today, most are.
