I upgraded from an i7-3820 to the i7-4930k. I've got my build up and running with Mavericks and it screams.

Note: The current Mavericks release does not yet support Ivy Bridge-E, so this build -- until December 2013 -- has the following limitations:

  • You need to use a modified kernel. This isn't too scary -- change one character in the hex editor and you're good to go.
  • No power management yet. It's coming.
  • Multiplier overclocks do not yet work. You can overclock with the BCLK.
  • FakeSMC needs updating for CPU sensors to work.

Again, all of these issues will be resolved in December when the Mac Pro gets released and we have a fully native kernel.

The Install

  1. Before you start, you'll need to use a modified kernel. I've attached it.
  2. Create your USB stick using Unibeast or whatever tool you prefer.
  3. Copy the modified kernel to your USB. Go to the terminal, and type:

    "cd " [with a space]

Then drag the folder where your modified kernel is. For example:

    cd "/users/Erik/Downloads".

Then copy the Kernel to your new USB stick. Use a command like:

    "sudo cp mach_kernel "/Volumes/USB/"

Where USB is the name of your volume.
  4. Boot from USB. Install Mavericks.
  5. Restart. Use USB Bootloader to boot, but boot into your new installation.
  6. Copy the Kernel again. The install will put the vanilla kernel, and you need to fix that.
  7. Use Multibeast 6. No DSDT. These settings should work:

Note: DO NOT install the FakeSMC Plugins. It will not boot.

Alright!

Performance is pretty good:

Geekbench3, no overlock:

Geekbench 3, with overclock (4.5Ghz, achieved through BLCK OC):

That's it! Good luck! Ask questions and I'll try to help!

I'm about to start actually the same build, except I'm doing different hardware so I do thank you in actually doing this before I started to mess with mine as I am pretty experienced at building computers but this will be my first hackintosh project.

1. Wheres the modified kernel?

Thanks in advance.

how to modified kernel ?
I cant see your file

if you google Ivy Bridge-E mach_kernel its on osx86.net.
No I don't know if I can link to it. But if you google it, you will find it. Should be the first link.

It was just doing a black screen earlier now its going hanging on PCI Configuration begin part.
i used
"-v GraphicsEnabler=No npic=0x2000 cpus=1"
I think I need to add PCIRootUID=0 to it. I will let you know.

This worked for me!

Asus P9X79LE

The mach kernel got me past the black screen, but it halted. pcirootuid=0 got me to the installer menu finally! Thanks a million.

Hi Erik,

First off, thank you for this build and advise.

Although I have posted and been on this forum for a little while now, I'm still a newb.

I've just received all my components to build a Mavericks system very similar to yours. I've recently built a Haswell system but I did not have to do much at all and it all worked. I have no clue how to modify a kernel or what a kernel is. Do you have a link or can your give me a step-by-step I can follow etc.? Also a link to whatever I need to download.

The system I'm hoping to build is as follows:

ASUS X79 DELUXE

Intel Core i7-4930K Ivy Bridge-E 3.4GHz

Corsair Dominator GT 32GB PC1600

EVGA 04G-P4-2768-KR GeForce GTX 760 4GB 256-bit GDDR5

256GB SAMSUNG 840 Pro
(System Drive)

128GB SAMSUNG 840 Pro
(Lightroom Cache Drive)

CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i

Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound

4x WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB

Fractal Design Define R4 Case

Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm Case Fan
(To replace the fans that come with the H100i)

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Hi all,

Quite interesting behavior here!

Our setup is as follow:
- i7 4930k
- Gigabyte X79S-UP5-TH WiFi
- Zotac GTX 780

After reading this post, we downloaded the patched kernel form osx86.net describe as 10.9 Ivy Bridge-E, Atom & Lapic Fix Kernel. And then, we booted from the pen drive with GraphisEnabler=No cpus=1 npci=0x2000 PCIRootUID=0. After the apple screen, we get the gray screen where we can move the mouse (slowly I don't know why), but the installation window never appear. Changed to PCIRootUID=1 and same thing.

Try the one with the file name New_Mach_Kernel.zip, or npci=0x3000

I read this board has SSD caching on some of the SATA ports. Does it work under OS X (i.e. setup entirely through the BIOS)? It'd be nice to know for the X79 Deluxe.
