Considerable performance deficit after High Sierra installation - mitigated

For various reasons, mainly a policy of "if it ain't broke...", I have resisted updating the OS on my hack. Until last Sunday my machine used ElCap quite happily. Then there was a security update for Safari which basically broke my graphics. I was using a GT 740 Kepler card, but after the Safari update the Web Driver was deprecated and Nvidia had no supported update. This forced me to install a Pascal card I had on hand, specifically an EVGA GTX 1050ti. As I understand things Pascal GPUs are not supported under El Capitan, which necessitated the long-delayed upgrade to High Sierra.

The update went well, but I have noticed occasional instability — slow-downs, freezes, choppy video playback, etc. — which often demands a restart or even a hard boot to correct.

Current graphics driver: 387.10.10.10.35.106

The NVIDIA Driver Manager offers to use the default driver. Would that work?

Default macOS drivers will not work. You will have to use drivers provided by Nvidia. Other users running Pascal card have had success using older version of web drivers. You can use the script provided on this site: https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/nvidia-update to install earlier version of web drivers.

I tried the built-in driver early this AM and found out about the non-solution. Looking at another thread about a similar problem to mine I saw a link to the same script as the one CyCLoBot advised. I ran the script. It did not offer to downgrade the Web Driver, but it seems to have cleaned up the installation of version 387.10.10.10.35.106. The problems may have been fixed. I tested my hack by loading several resource-intensive apps — Photoshop, Fireworks, Audition, and Excel — with iTunes playing an audio file. Prior to the script, this would have caused the audio to shutter, blast out static, or just freeze, crash and reboot.

I'll do other tests and mark this thread as solved later.
