If the problem is just moving an APK onto a device, you can setup a network share/server on the Mac (SMB, TFTP whatever) and use a suitable app on the phone to download it.
As I say said 2-3 messages up, adb is not a reliable transport mechanism. Many, many people have reported issues with it. It's not been updated for years.
I'm not a developer but use both Android File Transfer and XperiaCompanion to access my Sony phone. Both work well for non-dev work.
Just wondering about the problem getting an APK onto a device...
Again I am no expert but what I did recently was just copy the APK to my SD card and then let the system install it once I'd 'allowed' it.
Then used the App Manager to uninstall it later.
I guess the problem mentioned in this thread is way more than this? Obviously my phone isn't 'rooted' at all and running Oreo.
As for HandShaker as a transfer app. It looked good on the Mac App Store but sadly the Android companion app is not listed on my country's local Play Store, so it was a non-starter.
