Hey all! I haven't been here much... meaning my Hack has been kickin ass this past year!! The Hack has been really great, thanks again to everyone associated here!
I got my hands on a 6core i7 970 and decided to swap out the 4core i7 960. All good, however under "About this Mac" it says "3.58 GHz Unknown", I do have it slightly overclocked. I can't find anything, been searching the forum for the last 18 hours. The i7 960 was detected/identified no problem in 10.7.4. I saw one other individual having the same issue with a i7 980X....

Anyone know how to fix this?
Will this be an issue if I just leave it as is, "unknown"?

I apologize a head of time if I've asked the same question... BTW, the computer is running great and scored 16K+ on Geenbench, 5k more than the 960. Memory running at full 2002 now too.

Ugh... Logic 9 doesn't see all 12 threads/6 cores since the CPU is still "Unknown"... I was searching/researching all last night again, still no luck. I tried SMcputype 1973, but not even sure I was adding it correctly to the smbios.plist or com.apple.plist.

Ideas anybody? (pulling my hair)

Unfortunately, the only clone I have of my system is 10.7.4. Since I have a free HD, considering starting from scratch on that drive, maybe only go to 10.7.2 or back to 10.6.8.

i7 970 detected in 10.8?

Thanks all.

I got Logic to see all 12 threads!, duh, didnt check preferences, was set to 8. I also got "About this Mac", to detect 6-core Intel Xeon, this isnt correct but at least it's not unknown... iStat on my dash board still doesn't detect CPU.

smbios.plist:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">

<key>SMproductname</key>

<key>SMcputype</key>

<key>SMbiosversion</key>

</dict>
</plist>

Anybody rockin an i7-970 6 core CPU, correctly identified in OSX Lion 10.7-10.7.4?

Man thanks for this info!!:)

Just updated to the Lion 10.7.5..and have an Gigabyte X-58-a-OC with 980x 48Gb ram and the Processor ID got set to "Unknown" ...which in it's turn made Logic and Cubase and all other DAW for that matter not recognize the cores/threads at all...which in turn made them run really inefficiently and couldn't run my music templates without the one core that it got recognized blowing up in a matter of few bars of playback.

Was troubleshooting this for 2 days and started to run out of ideas...

I've installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on the separate drive to test it and your solution of getting Intel i7 6-core Xeon worked on that one...It didn't work on Lion 10.7.5...That's the one "Intel i7 6-core Xeon" that was showing in my "About this Mac" when I was running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it worked great.

All I can say is I'm updating my main SSD to Mountain Lion with this "1281" code ...since it works and it won't get in the way of DAW working properly.

Thanks again...At least it Works in Mountain Lion!!:))
