Hey, guess what. I got 5K but I do not have the retina resolution so everything is tiny. Why do I not get that option? Thank you for your help. not sure what I did differently.

Go to Display preferences and select Scaled, then the option in the middle.

I do not get that option.

so I do not get the retina option as the retina displays do, but it is essentially the same thing? or is it different?

This is another screenshot of what I get with the "Show low resolution modes" ticked. There are two 2560x1440 modes. One is scaled, the one I'm using is retina (it doesn't say retina but it is the same sharpness I get on my Retina MacBookPro).

I have a 970 with one displayport, two DVI and one HDMI 2.0.

Would the HDMI 2.0 be able to replace a second displayport using an adapter from HDMI to displayport in order to get 5k?

I have a Titan X with 3 DisplayPort and 1 HDMI port. In Sierra, I can get 5K with two DisplayPort, but I could not get 5K with one DisplayPort and one HDMI with a HDMI to DisplayPort adapter.
In Windows 10, HDMI + DisplayPort worked at 5K, but only at 30 Hz.

The HDMI to DisplayPort adapter is capable of 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz which is around 262 MHz. HDMI 1.4 goes up to 340 MHz. 2560 x 2880 @ 60 Hz requires 483 MHz which is outside the range of the HDMI to DisplayPort adapter.

2560 x 2880 @ 30 Hz is only 283 MHz, but the Nvidia Control panel doesn't allow modification of the timings of dual input display modes (or I don't know how), so I couldn't try increasing that to 2560 x 2880 @ 42 Hz (335 MHz). The Dell monitor wouldn't accept a 42 Hz signal even with single input display mode.

No one makes a HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort adapter yet:

Nvidia needs to fix their 5K support in macOS. It's much better in Windows.
