According to some detailed testing by barefeats.com, both a Mac Pro tower and a Hackintosh running a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 graphics card can now run 5K resolution at 60z on the Dell UltraSharp 27" 5K monitor. This is the first confirmation that a non-iMac 5K can run OS X at these resolutions.

The latest NVIDIA drivers now support a new boot flag nv_spanmodepolicy=1 which combined with nvda_drv=1 will initiate the display resolution in System Preferences.

This is great news- if you have these devices and can confirm, please let us know!

This is great news! I bought one back in December but couldn't get it to work so I returned. Just purchased again for $700 cheaper and I will test in 3-5 days!

would the 760 support 5k or 4k?
IIRC, you'll need a GTX 980 with at least two DisplayPorts, connecting to the Dell, to get to the 5K. But, this 5K compatibility is still "early in the game." So, stay tune for more info.

Presumably this would work with the GTX 970 too. As for the GTX 760, maybe IF it is a model that has two display ports? Nvidia's website lists 5120x2880 as max for the GTX 960 through 980 so my guess would be that all those models would work, but not the GTX 760 even if it has two DPs since the Kepler drivers may not recognize this option even with two DPs.

I get 4096 X 2160 on a 760 with the LG 31MU97.

50hz only though. Still it looks fine to me.

Interesting, that's strange that the GTX 760 caps out at 50 Hz. Did you achieve that 4096 x 2160 as max for that card. Have you tried using the Nvidia web drivers? Have you tried getting a higher refresh rate with Switchresx? Do you get proper retina scaling options in system preferences?

4096 x 2160@50hz is the best I can get in either OS X or Win 8.1. I can get 60hz in Windows if I drop the resolution down to 3840x2160 but then of course I have a 1 inch or so black border at each side.

I have tried both OS X and Nvidia drivers on the hack but the result is the same, 50hz only. I don't game and so I don't find a problem with 50hz, although I know it bothers some people.

I do get proper retina scaling but I have not tried Switchresx.

Interesting, If you get 50 Hz with the Nvidia drivers in windows then maybe 50 Hz really is the cap at 4096 x 2160 for the GTX 760. I agree, 50 Hz isn't bad for work! I have a 2013 rMBP that I've been able to get up to about 51 Hz at 3840x2160 even though OS X only wants it to hit 30 Hz max.
