That must be because usually kext updates don't replace the whole kext but just the modified components (most often binary) while the rest remain the same, therefore your XMLs weren't overwritten.I just update 10.9.1, AppleHDA goes from 2.5.0 -> 2.5.3, and to my surprise, it works OOB! No need to repatch AppleHDA or backup files anymore!
