damuffin, I'd like to compare notes.
My info:
Asus P8H77-I
Intel 3770k
HD4000 / no discrete graphics
Patched BIOS. I think it's v0904.
BIOS settings are the same as everyone else who successfully uses a P8H77-I.
It's plugged via HDMI into a TV which doesn't seem to send proper resolution info...
If anyone managed to save a copy of PJALM's P8H77-I Golden Build thread, please let me know. It was the best source of information for working with this motherboard.
I agree that, at least in theory, this should work.
However, if you use a Thunderbolt Display, there is a major limitation... you have to use the on-board HD4000 graphics. If you want to play high-end games or do other graphically intensive work, don't go with the Thunderbolt Display.
Only to free up an HDMI port on the TV for another input. I doubt any other TV peripheral I have would use VGA. I'm aware that a digital signal is superior, but it might not matter all that much for my uses, and I'm probably going to have to run audio separately from the video signal anyway.
Unfortunately the Z77 board has two fewer internal SATA ports than the H77 one, so I'd also have to spring for a card to give me the six needed ports. I'll have to price everything out and see what makes sense.
I realize that the non-native audio will be a pain in the butt with this motherboard, but it seems like there are a number of ways I can attempt to skin that cat. I figure the worst case scenario is having to just go out and get a USB audio adapter. I can live with that, since otherwise it seems...
It does appear like the Asus 670 DirectCU II TOP has been pulled off the market, perhaps because a lot of people were having troubles with unstable factory overclocks.
I am still likely going with the Asus non-TOP due to its quieter cooler vs. EVGA. For me, I'm looking for silence with this...
Here are the proposed parts for a multifunction computer for my living room. I need a parts check by the smart tonymacx86 crowd, this is kind of a weird one. The functions will be:
Serving stored media (video, audio, etc.) to the TV and a bunch of other household electronics. I'm talking...
Now that's just gratuitous! Very "cool idea", but I'm not too concerned about the 670 noise... famous last words, maybe! Anyway as a first-time Hack builder, I'd rather not press my luck messing with that expensive card!
I actually need it for a little more than gaming. Only a little...
I'll have to do some more reading on the coolers before I make my purchase. I scanned through some reviews and couldn't find a consensus, and I have very little knowledge on that issue. I don't necessarily need total silence, I just didn't want to take a big step back from my stealthy Mac Pro...
Thanks, I will definitely consider your helpful suggestions. I will probably go with the ASUS Direct CUII TOP, the Noctua cooler, and low-profile RAM (2x8GB).
It looks like Alfa147x has a new build that sheds some light on a couple of my questions.
1) There is a fix for the 2GB of RAM OpenCL problem in Mountain Lion.
2) He is using the D14 cooler and was able to get a couple sticks of 8GB Corsair low-profile RAM in there. I might just follow suit on...
