pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

Hmm... Strange... Have you installed CodecCommander.kext?
No I haven't. I've never needed it before on any Hack.

I just installed it and nothing changed. I don't know if I'm supposed to modify the kext somehow or not.

I really wonder if it's my board but I don't know how to check. I have cleared cmos to see if that helped, but no.

I guess the easiest way to test would be to boot in Windows or Linux and see if audio works. I don't know what can cause it to just stop working. Mine has been working perfectly since day one...

Well, I got it working again but I'm not sure what did it. I still think it's weird that the About This Mac showed everything normal but there was no sound.

Yeah. It doesn't make sense... But having CodecCommander.kext installed should help with audio after wake from sleep...

Well, after spending countless days trying to figure out why my old Z170 would start out running fast but eventually bog down to a crawl, I figured a new computer (Z370) would get rid of whatever zombie was tormenting me in the old computer with the slowdowns. So more hours spent trying to change things to see if the same slowdown could be eliminated from the Z370. I figured I had done something wrong somewhere. AND THEN I read about NVIDIA's defective updates that had been causing just these kinds of problems. So I jumped and installed the fix, bringing back an older version of NVIDIA's software.

Unfortunately my first attempt was mangled by a defective USB to SATA drive adapter, which as far as I can tell was responsible for the missing sound output from my new Z370. I had been rotating various SSDs in and out during this time. Something apparently got mangled.

So, finally it appears that not only does my computer no longer feel like it's stuck in molasses, but even my sound works perfectly.

BTW, I'm using your EFI and it works perfectly. Thanks!

Did you try using Activity Monitor to diagnose what was wrong with your Z170 build? I typically keep my systems up for weeks at a time and don't experience any slowdowns. Only the latest version of the Nvidia web drivers have had the severe lag and that's apparent immediately after a reboot or cold boot.

I purchased two of these USB to SATA adapters about a year ago and and they work great with SSDs and/or 2.5" hard drives. Bootable, quick, convenient, and extremely affordable.

Fr those who want to update to the macOS 10.13.3 Supplemental Update but don't want to wait for Nvidia to release new web drivers, you can do the following PRIOR to installing the Supplemental Update to keep the current Nvidia web drivers working.

  1. Go to /Library/Extensions/.
  2. Copy NVDAStartupWeb.kext to your desktop.
  3. Right-click the NVDAStartupWeb.kext that's on your desktop and select Show Package Contents.
  4. Open the Contents folder.
  5. Open the info.plist with Xcode or PlistEdit Pro.
  6. Go to /IOKitPersonalities/NVDAStartup/.
  7. Look for NVDARequiredOS and change its value to 17D102.
  8. Save.
  9. Use KextBeast to install NVDAStartupWeb.kext back to /Library/Extensions/.
  10. Install macOS 10.13.3 Supplemental Update.

The Z170 was the only computer out of 5 or 6 that I made that had the problem. It would slow down and occasionally actually lock up requiring a reboot. It also was the only computer with my GTX 960 in it. I remember looking at Activity monitor and seeing nothing unusual. Substituting new cloned SSDs with the same data would give relief for awhile, but always after some use would exhibit the same symptoms.

On another path, what do the new boot arguments ( -disablegfxfirmware -lilubetaall -igfxbeta -alcbeta -ngfxbeta shikigva=60 ) do and are they required for all 370 builds?
Thanks again for your help.
