Z690 Chipset Motherboards and Alder Lake CPU

All,

Everyone is familiar with Apple Silicon and the 2-year transition. This debate on the future of Hackintosh does not need to be recapitulated in every thread that talks about Alder Lake and Z690.

Those who choose not to build an Alder Lake Hackintosh are welcome to their decision. Those who do choose to build one are also welcome to their decision.

We will not let this thread deteriorate into a debate on this issue.

Hi guys,
I just acquired a MSI Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 and a 12700K and I plan to use my old RX580.
I have seen that the community has made a lot of progress on the Alder Lake platform.
I've seen also that a lot of people use an MSI Z690 MB.

I there any guide that would describe step by step installation procedure of Monterey on Alder Lake?
At least the important things like SSDTs, kexts, drivers Ethernet, Wifi. I have a good idea on how to use OpenCore but Dortania is not yet updated

Thanks
Titus

Unfortunately I'm in Italy and there's no microcenter here ihihih but it should be easy to buy a CPU online. Could you quickly summarize hassles in building a Monterey EFI for Alder Lake at this point? what doesn't work even with a well built EFI? Mine is a golden build, everything is flawless, it's just like a real mac to my understanding ahahah
The only issue I’ve seen (on Z690 Aero G) is the need to disconnect Thunderbolt devices from a flashed GC-Titan Ridge before shutting down, otherwise the system will restart instead of shut down.

Wake from sleep can take a few extra seconds, but sleep and wake do work.

Hello Titus,

Have you seen the 0.7 EFI folder curated by @etorix? It’s located here:

My Z690 Aero G build thread contains step by step instructions that can be used in conjunction with the above post. Just make appropriate changes for your motherboard.

That's why there is a default EFI folder; adaptation to your GPU and network, and post-installation (USB mapping, audio, etc.) is as usual and there is so little variation among boards that not much more is required.

If you want to do it all from scratch by yourself to learn, follow Dortania's guide for Comet Lake with a few modifications.
  • ACPI: use SSDT-PLUG-ALT.aml instead of SSDT-PLUG.aml (or my own SSDT-CPUR-Z690.aml, if you prefer; detailed explanations are here, and this then goes with a custom SSDT-PLUG to the fake objects in SSDT-CPUR);
  • Kernel: CPUID spoof to Comet Lake
    Cpuid1Data: EC 06 08 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    Cpuid1Mask: FF FF FF FF 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00;
  • PlatformInfo: no iGPU whatsoever, so use SMBIOS iMacPro1,1 or MacPro7,1; the latter will probably further require RestrictEvents.kext;
  • BIOS: if using regular OpenCore 0.7.6, disable either E-cores or hyper-threading in BIOS; to use all core and hyper-threading, compile pre-release OpenCore 0.7.7 yourself, or use the binary file in this post and enable Kernel>Quirk>ProvideCurrentCpuInfo;
  • and, for better CPU management, also use CPUFriend.kext and the companion data provider in the same post.

I have the same board. It works like the others. May have to play with device list to get Killer E2600 Ethernet to work
May I try your EFI? I tried the main one on this thread, and it was unable to detect my boot key for Big Sur.

EFI from this thread. The onboard network is Intel. (I had secondary network cards that I was working with.). I used MacPro 7,1. You will have to do the platform info page.

Thank you. I'll give it a shot now.

Coming from X299 I know the hassles of setting up an EFI lol but luckily OC and my BASE-EFIs definitely made it easier. I attempted to hack my Alder lake gaming build for fun and was surprised how easy it was to boot using CaseySJ’s EFI. One thing I noticed is that there aren’t any noticeable EFI differences across manufacturers (at least gigabyte and asus) Only major change was to make my own usb for my board but that was about it. It’s definitely snappier than my X299 build and worked well for the most part for the two-three days I missed around with it.

No major quirks as far as I could tell besides sleep but that is due to using Corsair products and both internal usb 2 ports sharing a hub.
My friend, I'm glad to see you here... you're definitely non abandoning the ship ahahah

I'm too considering jumping from X299 to Z690 as you read, do you feel it snappier? can you explain it? basically, what kind of performance improvemente you feel in day to day use compared to X299 and your M1 (I remember you bought one but I can be wrong)?
