[SUCCESS] Supermicro X8DAL-I & Dual Xeons X5675

I'm completely new to this. I have a Supermicro X8DAL-I motherboard. I downloaded High Sierra on an iMac & followed instructions for bootable USB. Got to "reinstall high Sierra" & cannot continue: "error can't connect to recovery server". Looks like I have no internet. Any help would be appreciated.

anyone tried this on a supermicro X8DTU dual x5670 with mojave or catalina?

Are you using Clover now? Clover Legacy works for me on my X8-DAL and it's interesting to see how it picks a few things up better than Chimera/Chameleon like the RAM model and serial number. Chimera always showed the BIOS ROM under memory and would not show the serial number for two of my sticks of RAM. None of those cosmetic issues at all in Clover. If you have not yet give Clover a try.

If I find time in the next few months I'll try to make a guide for installing El Capitan with Clover Legacy. Unfortunately, time is short with the busy season coming up for my business and child #2 scheduled to be evicted in a little over a week.
Hi, I know it's an old thread but wonder have you managed to make guide for the installing? For this same mobo - I have Maverick on mine perfectly works, but ,unfortunately, I need to update to a newer os -perhaps El Capitan is the far I can go with Supermicro x8 dal-i.

Audioguyjosh, thank you for your write up! This helped me pull the trigger on building a similar system for Pro Tools. I've tested Mavericks, Yosemite, El Cap, and Sierra and Mavericks and Sierra seem to work the best. Yosemite and El Cap just don't want to restart or shutdown properly regardless of EveOreboot kext or any Clover fixes. I had no idea previously you could build a system of this level for so cheap on eBay :headbang:.

CPU: 2x X5650 6 core 2.6GHz
Mobo: X8DTL-i
Ram: Hynix 4x 4GB 1333MHz ECC Registered (HMT351R7BFR8C-H9)
GPU: EVGA GTX 650 (no NVIDIA driver)
PSU: EVGA 650BQ
SSD: 830 and 840 Pro
WIFI: TP Link N900
AUDIO: Focusrite 2i2 USB audio interface
SMBIOS Mac Pro 5,1 (this processor was used in 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 Westmere)

I used UniBeast 7 and MB 9 for Installation with Tonymac Sierra guide.
Problems with Sierra:
-System only seeing 8 out of 16GB I had installed, which I fixed by manually typing in the ram specs into SMBIOS on Clover Configurator.
-GTX 650 reading 0GB of VRAM. Tried installing NVIDIA driver, but stopped with the problem of the OS switching back to OS X driver after restart. Tried installing EmuVariableUefi-64, but no luck. Not sure I want to install RC Script using the Clover custom installer because it also wants to install Drivers64UEFI and who know what can of worms that will be.

EDIT: Turned off Inject NVIDIA in Clover and system now reads correct VRAM
-Sleep does not work and I haven't tried fixing it, not sure if there is one.

Haven't tested Ethernet
Don't have anything to test USB3 with.
Didn't Bother with iMessage and I only use USB audio

Pro Tools 12.5.2 appears to be working just fine with Sierra, but I haven't spent much time with it, don't have access to 12.6.

That's my story if it helps anyone.
Hi, yes it's an old thread i know..but wonder have you installed High Sierra since?

Has anyone done High Sierra on this board?

I am able to successfully run High Sierra and Big Sur on Supermicro X8DAL-3 via OpenCore. Though I am unable to get the audio and Ethernet working. I got the Wi-Fi working via Asus AC68 PCI-E Wi-Fi card.

ooo this gives me an idea on building an efi for this board.
I can share my EFI file with you if you want.

yes id like to take a look at it.
Apologies for the late response as I was on a vacation. Will send you EFI tomorrow

Hi, I have running High Sierra on X8 dal-i and works well. Now I’m about to try to install Big Sur on x9 dal-i with dual Intel Xeon E5-2470(v2) and 96GB DDR3 (ECC) anyone have any suggestion?

yes id like to take a look at it.
May I have a look too? I’d compare it to mine :) I’ve installed the High Sierra on SSD drive, but have not used APFS file system. It was a struggle to make it work as I’ve running Mavericks on separate ssd and have dual boot setting
