[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hello Casey,

I have a Gigabyte Z490 Vision D motherboard with native T3. I successfully installed both windows 10 and hackintosh into 2 separated ssd disks (NVMe). Both seems to work quite well and the thunderbolt recognize an UAD (apollo) thunderbolt device. The problem I have is that when I connect a thunderbolt 27" apple display (T2--->T3 adaptor >>>T3 motherboard) it remains black with both OS running. I am ignorant in this field but following several exchange on this excellent forum I understand that if I can flash the thunderbolt chip following your mini guide I can expect improve my chances to see a day my apple screen lighting up...
I did follow your description until the code running the flashrom.
Here are my questions.
1. If I get a new firmware from the following repository https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...olt-3-i7-9700k-amd-rx-580.267551/post-2087524
how and were I need to write it in the computer so the following code
% sudo flashrom -p ch341a_spi -w Name_of_Modified_Firmware.bin can pickup it from the right place?
2. If something wrong happens and I need to write again the original file following this instruction
% sudo flashrom -p ch341a_spi -w firmware-1.bin is that file automatically uploaded from were the initial saving procedure stored? were is this location in the computer?
3. Flashrom ask for a password.
Password: <enter your password>
Do I need to put something there or leave it blanc?

4. Did this process will also make the Thunderbolt display running under Windows 10 to?

I will really appreciate your help

Best

Chris
Hello @chris77555,

Welcome to the forum. However, I have to caution you very strongly against flashing the Thunderbolt firmware. At the top of the Z490 Vision D build guide, we have this note/warning:

I know you have an Apple Thunderbolt Display, but it is very old now and there are lots of wonderful 27-inch monitors on the market today at very competitive prices. They offer HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2/1.4, and even USB-C. Some have speakers and USB hubs built in.

Thunderbolt monitors are very unreliable on a Hackintosh. There are too many user complaints, which is why I added that note (NOTE 8c).

Additionally, flashing the Thunderbolt firmware is a risky operation and should only be done by experienced users.

I know it's tempting and even exciting to try and flash the Thunderbolt firmware, but I believe this is not a justified reason for doing so.

The crash log shows you're using iMac19,1 and AMD RX 5700 XT. Are you using Platform ID 0x3E980003 with Internal Graphics set to Enabled (not Auto) in BIOS?

Also consider trying Big Sur 11.2 public beta. This will require enrolling in Apple Beta Software program.

Beyond this, I'm afraid there's nothing else I can suggest -- other than to search the web.
In bios internal graphics its enabled. Is this my platform id?

Yes you have Platform ID 0x3E980003, which is good. The other platform ID (0x3E9B0007) can produce various problems, but you are already on the correct ID.

I check now ¡¡¡thx¡¡

Edit:
The same thing keeps happening, the application closes, what I do not understand is that if I edit a normal picture the application works perfectly, only those with portrait mode fail ...

Thanks again.

I just tried this on my primary system:
  • Z390 Designare
  • PowerColor RX 5700 XT
Result: Photos app crashes when editing Depth field. So you are not the only one!

Suspicion: With AMD RX 580 GPU, there is no problem. But now with RX 5700 XT (macOS 11.1) the Photos app crashes.

I am upgrading this system to 11.2 Public Beta. Will report back soon.

I am not alone ¡¡¡ What peace of mind to have a forum like this and people like you who help everyone!
