[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

A couple days ago, updated from Mojave to Catalina, the process went very smooth, but....

I'm facing a huge nightmare , sometimes the Finder and other apps gets stuck with the " spinning beach ball". I guess everything it's related to permissions. I'm giving access to most of the apps I use the regularly in Security & Privacy.

But I wonder there's and easy way to reset permissions ?

Fwiw, I use my hack mainly for music/daw production (non professional). I have a TB2 Quantum Presonus 2 for my logic output (+ occasional vocal recordings) and 1 or 2 Behringer UMC 404 (/204?)HD USB interfaces for the mac's sound output. For example, I use the Behringers for youtube playback/output (and I can control that volume through the function keys) and the Presonus for VST/DAW output.

Had some occasional mouse stutters in the past (Logitech mouse+KB) but, after my latest fresh install of Catalina, that's all history.

Been 2 months now, and though I haven't used it on a daily basis per se, it's been rock solid so far.

Just my 2 cents :)

I am really surprised that so many are having issues with USB. I run Motu M4 USB-C audio interface and Caldigit Thunderbolt dock, Camlink 4K dongle, a number of external SSD, internal M.2, with Radeon VII, Rode NTG mic, Fuji XH-2 connected for video conferencing, and have never had issues with freezing, instability. I run Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Final Cut Pro, OBS all day long and not once the machine froze on me. Just for testing purpose, I unplugged all the devices, connected them directly to the machine's USB on the back and front, and still ran flawlessly. I am wondering if it may be worthwhile to try opencore install for those who are on Clover before purchasing new peripherals to solve this issue. I did create my custom SSDTs in windows and mapped all my USB ports I need. The only thing I had to add in the config.plist was shikigva=80 for DRM fix.

I did use ASUS ROG Strix gaming which is well-known great Hackintosh MB, but had the similar USB freezing issues, and other stability hiccups. I had not mapped USB at the time, and used the generic SSDT code for coffee lake provided in the guide instead of creating my own. Perhaps it wasn't the motherboard, but the boot environment that was causing instability.

I've said this multiple times in this thread, but I've personally seen this exact same issue span across multiple OSX installs across various versions over the years, and also multiple builds with completely new hardware in each. I'm convinced there's either an underlaying OSX problem, or perhaps I just have craptastic luck when it comes to motherboards and the silicone lottery. All builds have been top of the line hardware at the time of the build too, so it makes no sense to me.

I can personally vouch for trying both OC and Clover - the bootloader is not indicative of the problem occurring or not, sadly. I wish it were as simple as just swapping out the bootloader. I've tried so many different settings, configs, SSDT's, etc. The problem persists, although, I seem to encounter it a lot less frequently than others who are plagued by it for some reason.

If this USB workaround doesn't fix the issue, I'm tempted to try another board, but it sounds like these are getting hard to find now. I'm not sure if it's a certain combination of hardware or what.

Hello @echosat1,

Nice to see the detailed post!

Because of your particular configuration (no Hackintosh kexts in /L/E), the upgrade from Mojave to Catalina should be quite straightforward. The entire procedure is detailed in the post below. And it is very similar to what you already have.

Because we enable NVRAM, we no longer use EmuVariableUEFI. And we remove any previously installed Clover "rc" scripts (all of which is in the guide).

The guide also provides a ZIP file containing a new set of kexts and UEFI drivers. We do in fact replace the UEFI memory driver with OcQuirks/FwRuntimeServices. These files are already included in the ZIP.

Because you're already making regular CCC backups, you're again one step ahead.

Regarding differences between your config.plist and those in the upgrade guide, you're welcome to compare the differences and update your existing file as necessary. But if the system fails to boot Catalina, then start with one of the supplied config.plist files and transfer your SMBIOS details into it.

The name of the disk should be changed AFTER Catalina has been fully installed and tested.

I just updated macOS to Catalina 10.15.5 from Mojave;
- Updated BIOS UEFI version to beta-F9g (I will update to the latest stable release after enough people test it).
- Replaced AptioMemoryFix and EmuVariableUEFI with OcQuirks/FwRuntimeServices.
- Boot from Clover USB, update Mojave to Catalina, -> restarts.
- F12 -> USB -> Catalina Installation -> 9 minutes left -> Restart -> (F12) USB -> Installation (then logged in to Catalina)
- I realized I forgot rc scripts so I removed them after Catalina installed. Also I unchecked 2 options in config.plist according to NVRAM guide.

Everything is working as expected for now, I hope the system is stable after the update. I will test it at least for a month then I will update my backup SSD with CCC for the current Catalina installation.

Thanks again!

I've said this multiple times in this thread.....

Can someone please provide a quick synopsis on USB problems? I'm not a producer or anything, but use a tonne of USB devices connected at once (included some very power hungry ones) that I leave connected with no issues. I'm posting them below to see if it helps narrow down the problem. My current USB devices that are connected are:

- GK420D Thermal Printer
- Streamdeck XL (for gaming)
- Blue Yeti Microphone
- Logitech HD webcam
- MM710 Gaming Mouse

All of the above is in addition to the Apple Wireless Mouse and Keyboard that are connected via Bluetooth. Then in addition of all of this, I plug and play various things like my iPad Pro 11, Sony A7iii, 256GB USB Flash Drive, 1TB SanDisk Flash drive etc.

So the Inateck card has arrived and been installed, and I *think* I might have found my problem. With my two Dell U2515 USB 3.0 hubs plugged in to the card POST takes ages (1-2 minutes) and then I get immediate intermittent USB freezes on the BIOS/OC boot screen, and then macOS wouldn't boot. With one hub disconnected POST is normal, OC is normal and macOS boot is normal. Going to have to use the system for a while to say that this is definitive, but it looks like my issue is/was a defective USB hub. Very strange that the hub would boot normally and work normally (for a while at least) while connected to the mobo USB ports, and why it would not work at all when connected to the Inateck card - maybe @CaseySJ can throw some light on why that might be?

I'll report back if anything changes, but for the moment things are looking positive...
Is it like my Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H and this board has an XHCI mode in the BIOS? I ask ´cause I had a bunch of troubles with an USB3 hub and my external HD’s when it was set to « Smart Auto ». Boot-up was really long, sometimes disks not recognized... until I changed it to « Enabled ». There are four options on my Z97: Smart Auto, Auto, Enabled and Disabled. The only (and still) working option was « Enabled» for me.

Sharing this to give some hope to those who are wrestling with the issue. It may not be hardware issue after all.
Good to know as my parts are coming. It looks like this new Motu M4 is a real gem BTW!

Hey! I haven't had any USB problems but I also don't use USB for recording — only to control hardware, attached external drives, etc. I use a RME HDSPe MADI as my connection from converter to computer, which is a PCIe Card. I'll outline my setup below and maybe it'll shed some light. That Github link is very old. I should remove.

Orion 32 HD > MADI > RME HDSPe Madi > Computer (Using USB to control the Antelope software but not for audio)
UAD Apollo x8p > ADAT > Orion 32 HD > RME HDSPe Madi > Computer (Using TB3 to control UAD Console)

Mojave 10.14.6
Bios F8
SMBIOS 19,1

UEFI Folder

Kexts (WEG, LILU, AppleALC in L/E)
View attachment 478132

Config.plist attached (serials removed)

Hope that helps!
Thanks!

Yess! Another one with functioning USB!
