[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Great news @jb007!

This may not be the most elegant way but I found a fix!

It turns out all we need to do is stop /usr/libexec/ioupsd (UPS daemon) from running...

1) Mount the root filesystem as RW - "sudo mount -uw /"
2) Rename ioupsd to something like ioupsd.ORIG (for safekeeping)
3) Reboot
4) Mount the root filesystem as RO - "sudo mount -ur /"

Done and done!

I'll look into finding out how we can stop PM from having configd launch ioupsd in the first place that would be even cleaner, but this will do for now :)

If someone can help with that, please let us know!

Thanks, I'll try in a very short while and see if I can validate. I was trying myself to find a kext responsible, I didn't think of a daemon! Doh!

Here they all are...passed-through!

Hi @lambusser. As they say in Australia (well some do) Bonza, you beauty! All good and no pesky UPS!

I've also tried removing the USB ports, but no difference.

This method is most probably not the ideal way going forward, but hey it works.

With your permission, I can put a link to your fix or better still since you resolved it maybe you can?

I'll tag @CaseySJ to let him know so maybe he can put it in this great thread content page so others can find it.

Thanks very much for your help! :headbang::headbang::clap:

Hello everybody.
I just upgraded to Catalina 10.15.4 from Mojave 10.14.6.
The upgrade did everything automatically, without the need for any intervention, all very easy.

I have the F9B Bios
MSR 0xE2 unlocked.
Clover 5106
ImacPro SMBIOS 1.1
IGPU is disabled

The only strange thing is that there is an update available in the system preferences, even if in reality it has already been done.
Aside from the different SMBIOS, the configuration used is that of Casey's guide, and I thank him again for the splendid work he has done for all of us.

I have a question please ,
Whenever I press the Power Button on the First Time (when the PC is completely shut down), the computer Starts for 1seconds, then shut down, then it starts again alone for 2 seconds to shut down again. Again, a 3rd time it starts on .
...
Thank you

Frankly this seems "normal", at least for many gigabyte boards, probably other brands too but i have built almost all gigabyte systems so i cant say for sure. It seems to have to do with the specific components installed, even thunderbolt devices plugged in, and probably RAM too. In any case i don't think there is much you can do about it and its not doing any harm, just seems to be how these boards are designed. My Z390 Designare shuts off once then boots, i have an X99 Designare fully loaded that will shut off twice and go through a bunch of internal clicking/switching noises from a cold boot. The only boards i have currently in use that are not gigabyte are my Asrock Z390 ITX boards and they don't do this but they have substantially fewer components, so its not really comparable. in any case i have been through testing of this and found that if i strip out the right combo of components it eventually will stop doing it but obviously i need these components and this is just how these systems are designed to work.

I forgot to mention I do own a 2019 Mac Pro, and I can always help pull info from it if its helpful.

One thing I noticed today was that all 4 Thunderbolt buses have firmware 49.4.

I also have a spare Apple IO card that has a Thunderbolt controller on it, but I don't see any firmware chip at all on the card. Unless its using a chip that is a completely different form factor and in that case probably not accessible by a programmer. The only chip that has 8 pins and looks a little like the Winbond ones is super tiny, like 1/10th the size of the Winbond we program, so I hope its not that. It's also possible that the extra pins off the PCI slot that carry the USB and audio. It also has signal routed to a Winbond type chip on the motherboard. i haven't opened it up to search the motherboard yet.

These two codes don’t cause the computer to wake up from sleep (at least from a fans and lights perspective). These codes happen as soon as the fans and lights turn off for sleep. I am using a USB keyboard and USB mouse and proximitywake is set to 0.

for the other code that actually causes wake-ups, My computer is currently asleep and I am waiting to see if it wakes up after turning back on Find My Mac...

One thing that I did notice difference between OC and Clover is that OC I am able to find my mac WITHOUT wake for network access selected (the computer would also wake up (fans)). With Clover, I am not able to find my mac without wake for network access selected

@CaseySJ If you put your computer to sleep manually, and then wait until your fans and lights and all turn off (about 30 seconds?) then click your keyboard 2-3 times to wake it up.. what do your wake logs show?

similarly, when you put your computer to sleep and wake it up by opening Find My on your phone

log show --style syslog | fgrep "Wake reason"
Here are my observations regarding Find My Mac with Clover as the boot loader :
  • Wake for Network Access is not strictly necessary to enable this feature.
  • System Preferences --> Internet Accounts --> iCloud is configured as follows:
    Screen Shot 2020-03-31 at 3.53.09 AM.png
  • On the iPhone I can see my iMac:
    IMG_1120-resized.jpg
  • When computer is asleep with Wake for Network Access enabled, launching Find My on iPhone and refreshing the locations of all devices does not cause the iMac to wake.
    • If this works in OpenCore (perhaps even without Wake for Network Access) then it seems like a benefit!
Code:
casey@Caseys-iMac ~ % log show --style syslog --start "2020-03-28 00:00:01" | fgrep "Wake reason"

@CaseySJ Does anyone have issue with monitors not waking up from sleep?

  • Sleep is working fine + Power nap
  • When I wake the hack, the monitors won't wake, I need to trigger another input from the keyboard or mouse for them to wake up

Interesting - My system is also crashing with the monitor connected to the display port on the TB dock. Has anyone else experienced this ? Note : Am using an in built TB port. @CaseySJ @NorthAmTransAm
  • Which TB 3 dock are you using?
  • Have you tried setting Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007? (Although I'm not sure if this matters. Docks should have their own simple video chips without needing to tunnel DisplayPort through iGPU.)
