[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I found this thread also (Post #1) and it show that with rx gpus, tb3 connection and dp1.4 it works! Im not sure though...

If the LG's onboard DisplayPort is version 1.4 then I would certainly run a DP-to-DP connection. Thunderbolt add-in cards (AIC) with 2 DP-In ports will provide full resolution via Thunderbolt 3. But even with a single DP-In, we get fairly good results. For a true 5K monitor (5120 x 2880 resolution) here's some information about the capability with a single DP-In:

Hi everyone,

I have build my first hackintosh following post #1, the only thing I couldn't get to work was wifi with the Fenvi card, so I used the ABWB card which works very well. I was wondering if I could change the name of the hard disk, for example change "Mojave" to "Hackintosh SSD" just by doing Command+I or if I should change something in Clover for example or in the Carbon Copy Cloner script?

Hi Casey,
My knowledge here is a very little...
I found today from "thunderbolt 3 experiences" with designare z390 a success story with LG Ultrafine 5k display (5120x2880) via tb3 connection and dp connection from rx580 to motherboard's dp in. Isn't it enough then to run at 5k2k resolution (5120x2160)?

@CaseyJS I just got the random crash after system is switched on for 10min again, but this time the difference is that I fully switched off the computer the all night (unplugged it). And since I have the crash everytime, any idea what could cause this ?

It's the exact same problem as before, black screen after 1 to 20min of usage. I dont understand why it worked perfectly for a while and now I got issues again ><

Hey Guys.. I got the same build with Designaire motherboard and RX580 graphics. I am using Asus 4K monitor whose one HDMI port can display @60HZ. But I am only able to use 30HZ at second HDMI port. If I connect it to 60 HZ HDMI connection then the screen goes blank. I also use switchresx to manually change setting but the problem persist. Is there anything I can do to fix this little annoyance.

Hello @Etyel,

You may rename the Mojave SSD in Finder at any time. There is nothing else to change. No change to Clover configuration. No change to Carbon Copy Cloner script.

Unfortunately that's not correct. If you search this thread for posts by "joevt" you will find a number of detailed technical posts regarding this issue. The bottom line is that we cannot trust the resolution information provided by macOS in some places. For a true 5K monitor (5120 x 2880) driven by a single DP-In, the actual frame buffer resolution is 4096 x 2304 (9.4M pixels). This is more than 1 million more pixels than a 4K monitor, but still a little less than true 5K.

The 34" LG monitor that you are considering (5120 x 2160) is 11M pixels, which is more than the 9.4M pixels that a full 5K monitor receives from this motherboard. That is why I don't think this system will provide full 5120 x 2160 resolution through the Thunderbolt port.

However, if you buy a Gigabyte GC-Alpine Ridgle (not GC-Titan Ridge) then you will be able to drive this monitor at its full resolution via Thunderbolt 3. The nice thing about the GC-Alpine Ridge is that:
  • Even though it needs a Thunderbolt Header connection to the motherboard (THB_C) -- and the Designare Z390 does NOT have this header -- we don't have to worry about it!
  • Just connect 2 DisplayPort cables from the AMD Graphics Card to the 2 DP-In ports and you should be good to go.
  • However, we should not expect any other Thunderbolt devices to work because the THB_C header is missing. Only Thunderbolt 3 monitors can be expected to work.
The reason to stay away from the newer GC-Titan Ridge is because:
  • The Titan Ridge controller on the card is the same as the Titan Ridge controller on the motherboard.
  • The motherboard will disable the built-in Titan Ridge controller because it sees a duplicate device. The Gigabyte firmware should be smart enough to support both controllers, but I don't think it does.
  • So the on-board Thunderbolt ports may not work.

Have you already tried connecting your monitor to one of the 3 on-board video ports:
  • Thunderbolt port 1 (USB C). Just use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
  • Thunderbolt port 2 (USB C). Just use a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
  • HDMI port.
We'll need to set Platform ID to 0x3E9B0007 and add framebuffer connector patches for HDMI.

Alternatively, have you tried replacing the Radeon VII with a different AMD GPU?

Just trying to determine whether the Radeon VII is the source of the problem.

Please clarify:
  • What is the model number of the Asus 4K monitor? I have the Asus Designo MX27UC 4K that works perfectly.
  • Are you saying that the monitor works via HDMI if you set the refresh rate to 30Hz in macOS?
  • But if you increase the refresh rate to 60Hz in macOS, then the monitor goes blank?
