[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Pinging @CaseySJ since it might be relevant to him.

Hey, it's me, the EFIClone backup guy!
I originally posted a fixed version of wombat94's script here a few months back, however recently I discovered that it no longer worked properly because apparently CCC changed how it mounted the respective drives (it's now using a temporary location in /private/tmp/). As such the script would fail on newer versions (and especially on Catalina, since that version now breaks things into a system and a data volume).

I've figured out a way to dynamically determine the disk ID from that temporary mount location and fixed the script with this enhancement such that it should now be able to work for all backup situations again, without the need to hard-code the root (/) path into it. I've just tried it on the latest Catalina Beta and it worked fine, however please note that I do not have a setup which would allow me to test all edge cases this script might have, so use this at your own risk.

I also updated the description of the repository to be a bit more user-friendly and linked Casey's bootable backup section in the README just in case (and because it's excellent).
Wonderful! This is the right way to solve the problem. I'll test it soon and update the guide to point to your repository.

I just completed my build and am having great success. I'm even using an LG 5k / GC-Titan Ridge (without thunderbolt header) / z390 Designare and it's running at the FULL 5k!! I love it! ...
Glad to hear it!!

I haven't installed iOS 13 Public Beta on my 2018 iPad Pro so hopefully someone might be able to provide some hints regarding SideCar. On the other hard, iOS 13 should be fully released sometime next week following the Apple Keynote so more of us can chime in then.

I started getting some worrying behavior this morning after a couple weeks of good performance:

Sleep is disabled on my workstation. Left the computer on at the studio yesterday after a long work day with zero issues. Came back this morning and the system and UI is unresponsive to the point of being unusable.

See this video to see what i mean:

Notice how even though the cursor is free, the dock stops responding to its movement and the app icon stops its bouncing. Apps that take moments to load are taking up to a minute.

Not sure what the cause might be. Haven't installed anything or changed any Clover or UEFI settings.

UPDATE: Unplugging Ethernet (was plugged into smalltree port) seems to have fixed it? FWIW I was having connectivity issues yesterday but I think they were caused by the switch/WiFi hotspot in this room. I've switched to the bottom port for now, though I do get worse network performance with it.

Memory is Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400MHZ. I'll try to remember to leave MemTest running the next time I'm away from the studio, but I never had trouble with this memory for over a year using an ASUS Z370 board. In the meantime, I have to get work done today so I won't have time to troubleshoot until evening I think.
Because this is a sleep/wake-related issue, perhaps it's worth reducing your DRAM speed to 2666MHz if you're using faster RAM. The procedure is described here.

Egpu (s) Blackmagic and Sonnet EGFX BREAKAWAY BOX 650 do not work in TB3 (on my configuration: Gigabyte Z390 designare, Core i9-9900k 3.6 GHz RX 580)
But LG UltraFine 5K works well !!!

After some test I had done I could not even boot at all because of Initial Display : PCIe 1 Slot, it was always black even with the card unwired and HDMI plugged in MoBo. I had to reset the cmos so I have a blank BIOS setup now to configure again. I wanted to connect back the discrete GPU, and I could boot again and see designare boot logo. After 20 second being in the BIOS setup I encountered the exact same issue, black screen and then my screen saying no signal.
If the screen went blank while you were in BIOS Setup, then it implies a hardware problem. MacOS is not loaded, of course, while you're in BIOS. It might be a good idea -- as a first step -- to unplug and reinsert the following:
  • The AMD GPU. When removing the GPU, be sure to flip the retainer clip behind the PCIe slot. Reinsert the card and ensure that PCIe power cable(s) are securely connected.
  • The memory DIMMS. Remove and reinsert all DIMMs.
Additionally:
  • What power supply do you have?
  • How many watts?
  • How old is it?
  • If you're using a power strip, did water spill onto it?
  • Are you using a UPS (uninterruptible power supply)?
  • Are you using a surge protector?
  • Is there any Nvidia GPU in the system?
  • Do you have Windows installed on this system?
...
I'm such no expert that I'm getting out of ideas, except formatting everything and trying a clean install. But will it be really a clean install ? Is it worth to try ?
At this time a clean install may not be justified because it sounds like a hardware issue.

Hey CaseySJ, thank you for the CLOVER folder for my X99 Asus Deluxe II. Couldn't have managed without your files. The installation went well and my X99 deluxe II finally get to move on to Mojave. The only caveat is having to replace my Nvidia card.

Some observation:
1. Thunderbolt is working but just like my previous build, it is not hot pluggable.
2. I have a Window OS drive (to activate the thunderbolt) started to appear in the finder as an external drive when I boot up the system. In my previous build, the Window OS drive has never appear in the finder. Is there a way to remove or hide it?

After changing the BIOS before installation, I get this message: "The system has experienced a boot failure possibly due to incorrect configuration. Previous settings in BIOS may not be compatible with current hardware state.

Current CPU Speed: 4302.5 MHz
Current BCLK: 100.0 MHz
Current Memory Speed: 1866.66MHz

I have the same hardware as you. Any ideas?
This can happen when the firmware detects a certain type of problem. The motherboard has a "BIOS Flashback" function that restores a factory default BIOS (vF3) when certain failures are detected. This is generally okay, but we must take some precautions such as:
  • Always shutdown the system and unplug from the wall (or flip off the power switch on PSU) every single time we do the following:
    • Insert or remove any PCIe card.
    • Insert or remove memory DIMMs.
    • Insert or remove internal USB devices (connected to F_USB header).
Other conditions can also trigger the flashback, but the above are some of the more common causes.

@CaseySJ

I tried your advice, and found out that did not work out. So I was pretty hopeless, and tried the in OS update of MacOS. Turning out the upgrade releases my BT card, and now it works like a charms. I am blessed.

I am not so sure if the OS version is the key factor, or the new installation made the change. So I just bring it up for our further discover.

And, thanks CaseySJ.

The only last thing to do now is to fix the shutdown/restart.
Generally we don't encounter problems with shutdown and restart. If you see the comments in this thread about build experiences and issues encountered, you will find that shutdown and restart are very rare.

So this means we might be overlooking something simple...
  • If you boot from the USB Install Disk and then select Boot macOS from Mojave at the Clover Boot Menu, does shutdown and restart work?
  • It might still be a good idea to perform a CMOS Reset as described in the Designare user's manual. Simply use a flat-head screwdriver to short the 2 designated pins.
Also feel free to do the following one more time (so we have the very latest):
  • Compress and upload CLOVER folder from EFI partition of Mojave SSD. You may remove serial numbers from SMBIOS.
  • Screenshot of /Library/Extensions folder.

Does TB3 hot plug work after booting into Windows first?

To hide specific partitions, please see this thread:
