[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hey Casey,

Thank you for the absolutely detailed build guide!

Im going to be building this machine shortly but before I dived in I wanted to reach out to the community about a few things. I see that Vega 64 support has been ironed out with 10.14.5, but is there a preferred manufacturer? Im going to be water cooling my GPU and would like to save on a brand that has a "cheap"fan instead of paying for a pricier fan im going to discard anyways.

Additionally, has anyone had any luck overclocking this chip? (im going to be running the i9 9900k but figure its the same deal). I've overclocked hackintoshes in the past, but the chip worked well for it. Curious if this is playing well with Mojave.

Lastly, do you guys think its a bad time to buy right now? Ive read in other forums that prices should be dropping soon as new products are going to be announced.

While you should be okay with most brands of Vega 56 and Vega 64, Apple recommends the following:
  • Vega 56
    • Sapphire Vega 56
    • XFX Vega 56
  • Vega 64
    • Sapphire Vega 64
    • XFX Vega 64
    • AMD Frontier Edition

Will defer this to others...

Intel announced a 15% price reduction for the 9th Gen Core CPUs. It would be good to wait for the new prices to appear, but not necessarily good to wait for desktop 10nm Ice Lake chips. Those are still 8-9 months away.

Thank you! I think ill try my luck with the cheap gigabyte Vega 64. I haven't considered an AIO cooled graphics card because I'm eager to do my own custom loop for the fun of it. Since the cooling will be over kill at stock speeds im going to try to OC. Ill report back with my results, might only be stable in windows - fingers crossed!

Hey all, I'm having some sporadic issues with Bluetooth and USB. I've been searching for a while, but with those search terms I haven't been able to find much.

Every once in a while (3x thus far) Bluetooth and my USB ports stop working at the same time. The Bluetooth icon in the menu bar gets a zig-zag on it. I've force shut-downed when this happens. When this just happened, I was able to boot, shut down normally at the macOS login screen, start up again and have everything working fine.

Yesterday when this happened I force shut-down, booted back up and saw a zig-zag over the Bluetooth menu bar icon. Bluetooth did not work, but USB did. I eventually restarted a few times and got everything working again.

The only change I've made recently is installing a SATA HDD. The programs I've had running include Ableton Live and the UAD Console. I don't know if there is a pattern there though, I pretty much always have those running.

I'm using the wifi & bluetooth module, as well as the PCIe x1 adapter card from the guide. Not the Fenvi. I also use a USB 3 Hub for a few things on my desk. I'm going to try getting rid of the USB hub for now, just in case this has something to do with the MacOS limit on ports. I have not had 15 or more things plugged in at once, but with the hub there are more than 15 ports available. EDIT: Unfortunately this didn't work, I had the same problem without the hub. Now to try plugging in USB devices slowly over time to see if something is causing an issue.

In addition, I've noticed that when I power up my machine the Gigabyte logo appears on my monitor for a longer amount of time than it was when I first got this hackintosh up and running. I'm not sure if that means anything but I figured I'd mention it.

Does this ring any bells? Is there something I should do the next time this happens to try and gain more insight to the issue?

Thanks for the help!

Hello @CaseySJ!

I finally received my new 9900K and Z390 DESIGNARE and installed 10.14.5 following your guidelines. Again, excellent guide my friend. I managed to install everything as indicated apart for some custom SSDTs for my already owned hardware.

I'm just having kind of an annoying issue. Its a random crash/panic at boot. I say random because it only happen sometimes. Its definitely Vega64-related and perhaps audio too (HDAU or HDA, I don't know which one). Would you mind taking a look at the pic attached please?

I'm fine tuning my system now, so I would like to have this issue fixed. After that (and if you agree), I would like to make an extense post in this thread detailing everything on my build, update my system profile (from X99 to Z390) and upload my custom SSDTs and kexts for other users to take advantage of them. Also, comment some minor issues I had as well.

Thanks in advance,

Cheers!

Because Bluetooth is connected to a USB port, it is also a USB device. If your USB ports are deactivating, then of course all connected devices will deactivate.

The problem you describe can be due to any of several factors. Here are some suggestions:
  • First please check the basics:
    • Have you disabled all of the USB port limit patches in the Kernel and Kext Patches section of config.plist?
    • Have you installed the two USB SSDTs in CLOVER/ACPI/patched?
    • Have you also installed USBInjectAll.kext in both /Library/Extensions and CLOVER/kexts/Other?
    • All of the steps for this are detailed in the spoiler marked Final Steps in Post-Installation.
  • Next, reset CMOS the easy way:
    • Shutdown the system and pull power cable from the wall for 10 seconds.
    • Reconnect and restart.
  • If the problem persists, reset CMOS the hard way:
    • Reflash the F6 BIOS and set BIOS parameters once again.
  • If the problem persists, run Hackintool and grab a screenshot of this page:
    Screen Shot 2019-06-27 at 8.21.43 PM.png
  • If the problem persists, temporarily remove the RX 580. (Don't ask me why! :) )
    • Always shutdown system and pull power cable from the wall before removing or adding any internal devices.
    • Disconnect the PCI power cable.
    • Flip the retaining clip behind the PCIe slot and gently pull the card out.
    • Connect a USB-C to DisplayPort cable to either of the two Thunderbolt ports so your monitor is driven by the internal GPU (iGPU).
      • If you don't have a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, you may use the on-board HDMI port, but we will need to enable HDMI. If you provide your config.plist I can make the necessary change.
    • After RX 580 has been removed, do you still experience the USB problem?

Hello @nifranza, have you performed a fresh install of 10.14.5 or migrated an older drive? When you say "custom SSDTs for your already owned hardware", can you please provide some additional details (what hardware, what does SSDT do, who created SSDT)?

The errors in the screenshot are coming from the AMD graphics driver and seem to indicate a problem with the on-board VRAM. Perhaps you have a defective card or perhaps it needs two 8-pin PCI power connectors and you've only connected one? Perhaps your ATX power supply has insufficient wattage?

If you performed a fresh installed based on the guide in post #1, feel free to compress and upload your CLOVER folder along with a screenshot of /Library/Extensions. You may redact serial numbers from SMBIOS section of config.plist.

If you build the custom loop, I would love to see the result.

I have the exact same problem with my Radeon VII as do others I've seen post here, so it doesn't seem likely to be related to defective cards. My RVII doesn't experience any instability when under load in games in Windows or in heavy GPU compute tasks in Blender either.

FWIW I'm running mine from an EVGA G3 750W with both PCI-E power cables attached.

It's strange because it only happens roughly in 1 out of 5 boots and it's completely random when it happens. I figured it might be Lilu/WEG in combination with Apple's immature drivers, but couldn't say for sure. What usually follows after are errors relating to ACM, ARPT, AppleKeyStore failures and timeout errors for 'GFX0'.

At first I thought using iMacPro1,1 SMBIOS made it go away, but it only seemed to make it happen less frequently.

Kexts have been installed as per guide with iMac19,1 SMBIOS in mind with connectorless settings for iGPU - full acceleration confirmed in VideoProc. I'm currently using VirtualSMC for better sensor data in iStat, although worth noting that this error happens with either FakeSMC or VirtualSMC, so I've been able to rule that out.
