[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

there is a known issue related to RF interference between USB3 and BT. I have had this issue with:

1--a NUC hackintosh whose internal BT was very laggy and juddery. I disabled it and now use a BT dongle attached via a 3-foot USB extension cable. initially I had plugged the dongle into the NUC but the BT signal strength between the NUC and my keyboard/mouse 8 feet away was insufficient to overcome the RF interference.
2--my Inspiron 5570 hackintosh. same laggy-ness. I disabled the internal BT and use a direct-connected dongle. my trackpad is right next to the laptop so the signal from the dongle is strong enough that I don't need to extend the dongle away from the computer.
3--and as I was finishing the setup of my Z390 yesterday I installed a Dell 1560 wifi/BT. at first I had the same issue with that BT. I went to the google machine and discovered an inexpensive RF shielding kit from OWC which I ordered.
I won't post the link but go to OWC's website and search for "Bluetooth module shielding kit".

(story 3 resolved itself when I realized I hadn't installed both antennas on the pci card. internal BT is working fine now and I will try the shielding kit on my NUC.)

Thanks a lot for the insights! I could go for a workaround - but the reason I went for this card was to get maximum BT support.

Right now I am thinking I have missed something basic. What do you mean both antennas where not installed? Perhaps this applies to me as well. I just screwed the four antennas on, not sure what else I could do with them.

Depending on the Broadcom card, there can be up to 4 Mhf4 antenna connectors between the Broadcom card and the PCIe adapter. These are internal wires, but some pre-assembled cards such as Fenvi FV-T919 have soldered connections. If your Broadcom module and PCIe adapter are connected via tiny wires, double-check that all of them are securely connected to the Mhf4 nubs on the Broadcom module. If you have a magnifying glass or smartphone camera, it will be easier to check the connections.

Next, after you have connected all of the external antennas, try rotating or flattening the antennas to get a better signal. In my particular case, an upright V-shape orientation and a completely flat (horizontal) orientation seem to work best.

So now I've changed my M.2 drive and finally finished post install, Yay! But now I get the prohibited sign at startup and this message in verbose mode. See pic. I have tried deleting aptiomemoryfix-64 and replaced it with osxaptiofix2drv-free2000 and tried booting with and without slide=0. Sometimes the prohibited sign appears instantly, other times it takes 2-3 seconds. Please help!

This problem is usually solved with one or more of the following steps:
  • Shutdown and remove power cable from wall for 10 seconds (this is the only true shutdown).
  • Restart, but enter BIOS Setup and ensure that BIOS Version F4 or later is still installed. This board has dual BIOS, which means it can automatically revert to hard-coded F3 version.
  • We must use “slide=0” so no need to change that. OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000.efi is also needed.
  • If system will still not proceed, it will be necessary to re-flash the BIOS and set all BIOS parameters once again starting with “Save & Quit —> Load Optimized Defaults”.

When I installed the DW1560 and PCI-e card, I only had one antenna handy. (The card only has connectors for 2 antennas, which is all the DW1560 supports.) When I experienced the poor BT behavior, I went out to my workshop and dug up a second antenna, which solved the problem.

When I receive and test the OWC shielding kit, I'll let you know the results.

Good Morning All,

So, I'm back at the grind. I actually had to bump up my changes from Saturday to last night. (I know @CaseySJ) This is what I did.

When I followed the final part of the guide and rebooted I got an error:

This version of Mac OSX is not supported on this platform - Reason: Mac-F227BEC8

After googling, I felt bad for bugging Casey all day, I found out it had something to do with the SMBios. So, I booted and at the clover prompt I changed the 8,1 to 18,3 and that booted me right into the desktop. I then went into clover config, to make the changes 8,1 18,3 and copied the serial from SMBios to RT Variables pg section MLB, as per the guide. I crossed my finger and rebooted. I was greeted with a black screen. :banghead:

I was super motivated now, I didn't even want to watch Game of Thrones! I looked back all the conversations Casey and I had, and bam. He told me that if I was using my iGPU that would happen and I would have to do the framebuffer fix. Well my RX580 was waiving at me , and I took the leap. I powered everything down, and unplugged the pc, inserted my RX580, and jumped up and down 5x's turned around 5x's and took a swig of my Jack Daniels....I powered on got to clover and selected my drive, walked out the room. Came back and OH HELL YEAH!!!!!:headbang:

I had display. I logged in, I have audio, bluetooth, (I'm using Magic mouse and using bluetooth speaker) iMessages working. I think I have wake from sleep working I'm not sure though. I woke up this morning and hoped everything still worked and sure enough it has.

So I even checked if I had HEVC and H.264 working. Here's what I got:

So, I do have a few questions now that I have all that working. Does handoff work, and if so how do I test it. I only ask because I got prompted with the apple watch to login prompt and when I tried to say yes it just kept spinning and spinning. I don't need it but it is a cool feature if I could get it working.

If there is anything else that I need to do or change, please let me know.

Thanks again CaseySJ for everything.

Hello again. Machine runs smooth as hell. But know I have a new problem with login. I don't have a login passwort. Yersteday, I created one with German keyboard and know I can not login. I tried to type the password with the English keys but nothing changed. Is there any way to reset the admin pass through Clover?. The recovery section does not work. It stops with Warning: Service exited with abnormal code: 2.

Thx for the help again.

Now I try to boot from the USB and than in the Terminal resetpassword. But it seems that the booting fails too. I made an backup. How to reload the backup with Clover?

@gyrene2083, that's more like it!! Some comments:
  • It's easy to confuse iMac8,1 with Macmini8,1. The former will not work (support for that model has expired), but the latter will.
  • The VideoProc screenshot looks perfect.
  • If Unlock with Apple Watch is spinning, the first suggestion is as follows:
    • In System Preferences --> Security & Privacy, uncheck Unlock with Apple Watch
    • Disable WiFi. Wait a few seconds. Re-enable WiFi.
    • Re-enable Unlock with Apple Watch
    • It may also be necessary to restart Apple Watch.
  • An easy way to check Handoff/Continuity is as follows:
    • If you have an iPhone or iPad (and it's connected to same iCloud account as the Hackintosh), open an application such as Mail or Safari.
    • Then on the Hackintosh, bring up the Dock and check for the little symbol shown in the screenshot below, and the accompanying Tooltip.
  • This is a good time to make a full system backup!

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Some questions:
  • You created a password yesterday with a German keyboard.
  • Using the same keyboard, the password does not work?
  • Did the password work yesterday?
  • Then you tried English keyboard, and password still does not work?
  • Did you set a password hint? Are you typing the right password?
  • Did the system crash between yesterday and today?
  • Was the system not powered down properly since yesterday?
  • You cannot boot into the Recovery partition?
Depending on answers to these questions, your system may have experienced an OS corruption. If that is the case (again, it depends on your answers), you can try to restore from backup.

Oh wait...no backup? Really?

One of the benefits of installing the OS on a separate disk or partition from the Home folder is that it's insanely easy to make bootable backups at very regular intervals. A 256GB 2.5-inch SSD is about USD$35 and an external USB 3.0 enclosure for SSD is about USD$14.

Using Carbon Copy Cloner, for example, I keep a bootable backup of my OS disk. I can boot directly off the backup disk and copy its contents back to the main disk. Because the OS disk is comparatively small, backups take 5 minutes or less.

@CaseySJ, You know in retrospect, I am 99% certain that it was iMac8,1. My bad, should I just leave it 18,3 or change it MacMini 8,1? Also, just tried your Apple Watch, and disabling wifi, and re-enabling it worked. Regarding Handoff, I can't get it to work. I am logged in with the same cloud address, both wifi and Bluetooth is on both devices.

I have a two Terrabyte external USB 3.0 drive I am going to use to back up this Hacintosh right now...
