[Success] GIGABYTE Z370 Gaming 7 + Intel Core i7-8700K + RX 580 + (2x) Dell P2715Q 4k @ 60Hz

Hi all,
One of the best threads ever. Hats off to HackaShaq

Just did a build following this guide with parts that are a very similar spec:
- Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 5 M/B
- Intel i5 8400 CPU
- 2 x 16 MB G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 MHZ DDR4 RAM
But I built it with the internal graphics port enabled as I'm waiting on a RX 580 graphics card.

System seems quite fast from what I can tell with 5,598 Single core and 21,965 Multicore performance in Geekbench.

The only thing annoying me is the delay from wake on sleep, otherwise everything else good.

Hot crap on a stick. I think I've finally got High Sierra 10.13.6 going. My setup is nearly identical to @HackaShaq -just a different PSU, case, and RAM speed. Honestly, I had given up after a few months. It was shockingly difficult and annoying with those prohib symbols. But though those absolutely miserable failures, I think I'll be able to refine a few steps and hopefully help others who are having similar issues. I'm cloning my built system as I write this and I hope to report back with the ability to start my own build thread. Special thanks to @jb007 for guidance and encouragement. If this goes well, I'll be able to help my UAD/Pro Tools friends here on TonyMac. You'll know things are good when my avatar changes. ;)

Hey @jiffyslot, never heard that saying before! I've so glad you have (hopefully) got it going for you!

Did you find the culprit causing your 'Avatar' symbol? Fingers crossed for you!

What I've found is that if one borks an install, it kind of ruins the USB installer and you have to really start over, even clearing what seems to Optimized Defaults. This time, I opened the MultiBeast package and installed Clover from there to be sure everything matched. -This was the first time I did that. EFI Mounter v3 was not working on first reboot, and I didn't see any of the MultiBeast patches anywhere (neither EFI nor S/L/E) so I figured I was gonna be a Windows 10 guy on this machine when I restarted. But then, it just worked. So, I did what you said and I'm cloning the HFS+ Fusion drive to an Angelbird HFS+ SSD. If the clone takes, then I'll proceed.

Okay, so I have a working 10.13.6 APFS working on an SSD. -The APFS No Convert command still doesn't work. This build, I only used MultiBeast and Migration Assistant -I did not use Clover Configurator. My trick is to go into the BIOS screen and make certain that the SATA boot priority is always the UEFI part of my SSD. If you've used other drives (disconnected or not) it may take a few tries to get the right SATA device in this MOBO's "two-choices only" design.

FWIW, "Optimized Defaults" don't always stay that way and are not visible in the BIOS setup after you've attempted a build, so select "Load Optimized Defaults" every time that you attempt a new install. But hey what do I know? I've been trying this for way too long now. :banghead:

What I'm wondering now is: Should I go into BIOS and delete any other non-HD specific BCFG entries that are pointing to anything other than to my newly-minted installation? :?:

Thanks for that info. Yesterday when creating this Mojave install on my Dell Ultrabook, I used the new UniBeast that was just released and created the install... then, since there is no MultiBeast out yet for Mojave, I used copied the EFI folder from my UniBeast install over to the barren EFI volume on the Mojave SSD. Bang away she went and the rest is history. I'm actually typing this on my Dell XPS-12. Still trying to figure out Audio, but nearly everything is working (famous last words!).

@jb007 Do you know if i can remap the keys of my Steelseries Apex M750? I want to change the sound and brightness with F keys. Do you know if this is possible?

Hi Jim, yes you can remap your Function keys. I'm using Karabiner Elements which you can get from here. The software source is on git hub here.

I will be using it shortly on this Dell XPS-12 I'm running Mojave on. It supports Mojave by the way. There is another program they make that allows you to see what key code has been pressed etc... from my dim memory, I think it installs with the former program.

Download it and see how you go. I was using an open source utility for my Corsair keyboard which I had to remove before I got this going etc. YMMV if you are using any sort of RGB keyboard software on your macOS.

Thank you so much. I'm gonna try it and post the results.

Cool, I just downloaded it and it has two programs.. one is the main program and the other is a events app that shows you key and mouse events. Plus it's free!

Hey Guys, just curios, was the delay on wake ever solved?
My RAM is 3600MHZ, I can't seem to set the multiplier back to 30 to get a workaround either. Don't know if it's somehow locked or I'm missing something.

It's the only thing nagging me about this build.

One thing is interesting though. If I boot from the Clover USB stick into the MacOS HD, it comes back from sleep much more quickly.
Any ideas?
