Thanks for the quick reply @RehabMan!

Because there is no "{" at line 5 in the code you posted.

Apologies, I mistyped -- line 6. I fixed the original post. FWIW I can not reproduce this with the exact same code I pasted.

You should probably understand what you're doing...

Fully admit I'm in over my head with the hot patching. As I mentioned -- and linked in my first post -- I read your guide already. I even outlined the exact steps I followed from your guide, in hopes that someone more experienced could catch what I missed.

Admittedly I was hoping someone else who had already crossed this bridge could share their work. Still holding out hope for @alex.daoud :)

I just applied a security patch and now my system kernel panics almost immediately after booting. I can't really pin down what would be causing it besides the Meltdown and Spectre patches maybe. My EFI has been working for about 4 or 5 months with no problems.

Probably Lilu.kext is too old.

Thank you that worked. I think another Kext isn't loading now because my monitor (Thunderbolt to Displayport) isn't detected.

You may need to use a different ig-platform-id, or patch the framebuffer ig-platform-id data specifically to activate that port.

This may be a silly question and I am a totally out of my depth here, but how did you update the lilu.kext without being able to boot up into the OS. Did you boot into the recovery partition and update the kext through the terminal?

If your system can boot without Lilu.kext and related plugins, you can disable it with kernel flag: -liluoff
(as documented at the Lilu github README)

Thanks for the reply, this is my first time posting on a forum of any kind and I am amazed that total strangers read and respond to what I have to say.

Yes, I initially tried to disable the lilu.kext with the kernel flag -liluoff. I now do not get a kernel panic but my boot seems to freeze at "IOConsoleUsers: gIOScreenLockState 3...". Any ideas?
Having looked this up, I then tried to disable the InjectIntel in Graphics Injectors which was already unchecked.

I previously had been running my XPS 15 9560 on sierra for a couple of months without issue. It is only after applying the latest security patch to sierra without checking whether I needed to update any of the kexts that my system has run into errors. If i'm not mistaken, I should have updated lilu.kext and intelgraphicsfixuip.kext before updating. Would be great to solve this issue without having to do a fresh install.

Boot single user mode (with -liluoff), then install updated Lilu.kext at the prompt.
