I have strange patterns on laptop display when I have Nvidia enabled, both with default and web drivers.I am on el capitan, though, this issue I have is universal-- it's there from mavericks to High Sierra. Everything is fine when I boot with nv_disable flag or add an hdmi external monitor, it happens only with laptop display. These patterns are somewhat like pastel effect, and they are always there on the screen. They appear to be moving when watching videos. It's hard to describe, so I am attaching images, look closely to see those patterns.

i have face with the same issue on my laptop. Mine is Sony Vaio F22 with GT520M Nvidia card. It's there from 10.8 to 10.12 too.
Maybe it is come from hardware not software, i mean mac color profile not working well with our Laptop LCD panel. i have try many ways but fail to fixed this issue.

I have sony vaio vpceh25en. I tried .icc profiles from some other sony vaio laptops with same display resolution, however, nothing was able to fix it. It's generally bearable except when watching videos.

Patching EDID (as needed) with a display override file may help.
Any directions about how to do that? I know my EDID, and even in 'ioreg' it is correctly picked up, so any if you can throw some light on the process, it would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I found the relevant thread in the forum here, one thing that was missing from the post was information about non existence of /System/Library/Displays/Overrides folder in El Capitan, because it has moved to /System/Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrieds(Important note for people in the same boat as myself). Now, I will try to fix it with override file, let's hope it works!

I have overridden the display, it did change something when booting up like I have -v option enabled( the resolution automatically changed), but after boot up same problem as before, nothing has changed. I am attaching the modified override file. You can have a look. Also attaching switchResX EDID dump.
