[Niggles/Questions - But Working :)] First Install Support

Have you installed the latest FakeSMC.kext in your USB installer's \kexts\Other Folder?

Yes Ive installed this. I followed the guide TonyMacX86 made for the HS public beta to create the bootable drive.

Interestingly; I don't seem to need CCV to view my EFI. I'd think this would indicate a problem, but I seem to be able to boot fine from the USB and most of the installer is (almost) loading so this could be a red herring. Almost re-created this following the steps exactly quite a few times.

My error screenshot and clover folder is attached.

Once again - many thanks for everyones help on this! Can't wait to learn more about this process, hoping I can build some knowledge contribute at some point :)

I think I have an answer for your problem. See edited images of your Error message and CLOVER/kexts/Other as a combined image uploaded.
  • You need to add FakeSMC.kext missing in "Other".
  • You may Delete the un-needed numbered folders from CLOVER/kexts , keeping only "Other"
    • No harm in keeping the folders , no benefit in keeping them, can just clutter that .
  • Soon after Clover installation EFI folder getting 'automounted" is NOT UNCOMMON.
  • But after a reboot it will disappear and you will need EFI Mounter like CCV to mount EFI and edit EFI>CLOVER>and subfolders and config.plist if needed.
  • In this case, to add FakeSMC.kext, you will need CCV.

Damnit sorry; I had it in another folder like an idiot. Feel stupid now.
I now have the installer loading but it won't detect my disk. The installer can only see the USB drive.
I definitely have AHCI mode turned on; bit confused.

Update on this; I've done some research and tried the SATA 100 series unsupported & SATA 200 series unsupported (wasn't sure which I needed) kexts - still hitting the same problem.

Your motherboard has a 6 series chipset not 100 or 200.
It has two SATA controllers (Marvell and JMicron) and I am not sure that either is supported but try switching from one to the other anyway.

Edit : The SATA controllers require the AHCI_3rdParty_SATA.kext

Thanks. This got me one step closer. I was able to successfully install to my new HDD. When going through the installer and restarting I manually had to load into the installation drive through clover, but it eventually worked. Problem is - It's now installed and won't boot - I'm just getting a BIOS error message saying "Insert bootable device and hit any key to continue". Booting into the clover USB drive I can now only see the USB drive to load the installer again.

Initially I'd think this was a BIOS settings problem but I've tried lots with no benefit - and it's just sprung to mind that Clover can't see it. Surely Clover should be able to see the internal drive and let me boot from it?

I've boot into the installer to run a Disk Utility health check and OSX thinks its a perfectly valid and healthy install.

Where do I go from here?

I just checked the ASUS website and your board has three SATA controllers, Intel, JMicron and Marvell.
Try connecting your drive to an Intel port.

OK, this made a little progress. I can now see the drive from inside Clover. So if I boot from USB I can select to boot OSX (I'm using it now - YAY!).

Still got an issue though - probably to be expected - I need my USB drive to be able to boot. Found various "guides" on how to be able to boot straight into OSX but most seem to be UEFI specific or something which doesn't specify UEFI or Legacy at all. I believe multibeast only currently supports up to Sierra(?) so I don't think I can use that to help here.

Where can I find info on how to boot straight into OSX without my USB - specifically for Legacy mode?

Wouldn't normally carry on a thread this long as it's diverted away from my original question but I figure that if anyone else is running through a Legacy install or using my MOBO it could be useful information for them too.

Some background information to know about your newly created System Disk (SSD or HDD)
  • When you installed the System from your USB installer on to the System HDD or SSD after that was formatted through the Disk Utility using your USB High Sierra Installer USB , all that has happened to that HDD/SSD was getting a copy of the macOS High Sierra System files.
  • The EFI partition that was created in the SSD/HDD from the Disk Utilty in the Installation screen, remains empty; it DOES NOT contain any Clover EFI Bootloader . The Installer disk DOES NOT transfer that to the newly created System Disk. If you try to boot that System Disk it will be like a chicken with its head cut off!!!! It cannot reach its Destination screen , i.e, the Login screen and Desktop without the presence of the USB installer disk which can head towards a destination as it DOES have a Bootloader -Clover EFI.
  • Until we get a new Multibeast Specifically released for High Sierra, we are better off downloading and installing the latest Clover EFI from Sourceforge.net: https://sourceforge.net/projects/cloverefiboot/files/latest/download
  • After you download Clover EFI bootloader and launch click Cont >Cont> choose your Sierra System Disk as the target.
  • You then choose "Customize" and in the popup, choose Legacy if that is how you want your system. Often that is the default prompt also.
  • After you properly install your latest Clover EFI on the SSD, reboot again with your USB Installer in the System
  • After you can logon using your credentials (login name /Password) , check your System for the presence of all required kexts.
    • Click Apple icon from top bar>About This Mac>System Report>Hardware>Hardware Overview
      • Audio>
      • Ethernet cards>
      • Graphics/Displays>
      • USB>
    • If you have any problems take screen Capture of any or all of the above items.
      • Bring screen to your view
      • Press and hold down Windows Key, Shift Key , 4 (number Four) to get a Cross-hair mouse Cursor to drag and drop from Top left angle to bottom Right angle of the screen in view and the captured image of that screen will fall on the desktop
      • Dbl click image from Desktop> it will open in "Preview".
        • You can use Preview> Tools > to edit the image if you want, or Just upload that image by renaming it with a proper file name to indicate its contents.
    • If you already know what kexts are missing and you want to install, you can use Multibeast 9.2.1 >Drivers and sub menu like Audio|network|USB| Customize>Graphics Configuration and System Definitions [ Your MoBO Manual's Specifications > Chips information will help in the choice of kexts like Audio /LAN etc]
    • If you have problem, post with details including screen shots to clarify your posted information.

After you properly install your latest Clover EFI on the SSD, reboot again with your USB Installer in the System

Is it important to boot using the USB Installer, rather than the fresh install of Clover EFI? Is this related to installing all of my required kexts?

I already know I'm going to need to install graphics drivers - I haven't even tackled that at all yet.

Something rather curious is happening (it's not major, but it is interesting, and a tad annoying). The copy of Clover I have on the USB installer makes my BIOS crash when shutting down - I have to do a boot cycle with a failing BIOS before I can boot again back into Clover. This happens if I boot into Clover and not all the way into Mac. Perhaps this will also stop happening when I set up the boot correctly with the instructions above.

Thanks very much for those details instructions again - I'll be trying this again first thing tonight :)
