[Guide] El Capitan on the Skylake H170N-WIFI

Hey guys. First-time poster but looooong time lurker who has finally decided to take a plunge into OSX.

Big thanks to OP for the info.

I'm building more or less a snazzylabs setup but can't for the life of me get the audio working. Here's my hardware

- Gigabyte GA-H170N-Wifi board
- Samsung 850 Evo m.2 Sata drive
- i5 6500 CPU
- Noctua L9i cooler
- Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 DDR4 2x8 gigs
- BCM94352Z wifi card (arriving tomorrow) - Stock wifi card removed
- Realan W-80 Case

I've gotten everything setup per the instructions and the audio is the only thing eluding me and I can't figure out where I messed up.

I triple checked that I selected ALC1150 audio in Multibeast and it actually shows up in my hardware list but if I click in the left hand "imac" window just above where the "intel high def audio" is selcted and click on "Devices" the devices area in the section below that is empty.

It's like it just didn't get installed or doesn't see the hardware or something. If I plug in desktop speaker or ear buds into the green output jack on the motherboard, nothing happens and no audio.

I'm about ready to just buy an Audioquest Dragonfly and call it a day as I presume those are just plug and play but hopefully I'm just overlooking something simple here.

Edit: Reading through the thread, seems like a lot of folks may be skimming over the instructions or missing steps. Here are a couple of things that I had to double check.

- Only 8 gigs of ram initially showed up. I had to manually set the RAM in configurator (during the 2nd Plist editing - i.e. editing the h170n-wifi-intel-config.plist file) to dual channel, manually adding the two sticks as slot 0 and 2, setting their speed to 1600 (as my ram is 3200), and setting them to DDR4 type. I tried setting the brand to Corsair but I guess it wants a hex value ?? Or a serial number?

- Make SURE you change the boot drive in that 2nd plist file when you're edting (The one you copy the serial number into). On the "boot" section, at the top right, it will be set to a default drive for "default boot volume" Change this to the name of your main harddrive which should show up in finder) I didn't do this the first time and the OS would just freeze after the apple loading screen reached all the way. Left it over night and still no luck. That was the only thing I forgot and the only thing I did differently this 2nd install attempt and that wasn't a problem.

- CPU info and turbo boost seem to work normally. I installed the SSDT-i5-6500.aml per the instructions near the end of the OP. Grab the one for your CPU.

- I'm going to attempt installing the Realtek 100 Series audio drivers tomorrow in multibeast and see if that fixes my rear output jack issue.

.

Hi FastRedPonyCar, for your RAM, set it according to what it is. For my Crucial Ballastix 16GB RAM, they are 2400, so I put 2400 on both ram. I remember I did not tick the dual channel option, as ammulder guide doesn't specify that. Not sure if I'm correct, but I do get both RAM showing up and working. Remember to fill in serial number too.

Please let me know if your rear audio output work after adding the 100 series audio in multibeast. I missed out this step, and only added the ALC1150, and only my front audio port works (which is on my casing).

I believe 1600mhz is the correct setting for my RAM. You take your RAM speed and divide in half to get the core operating frequency.

Configurator doesn't have an actual 3200 value to select in the frequency drop down list. It stops at 2600.

I say this just under the assumption that Configurator is wanting the actual operating frequency vs the DDR operating speed on the box. If this is not the case then I guess I'll have to set it to 2600 and wait for Configurator to get updated with 3200 speed RAM support and then make the adjustment.

EDIT: Looks like this guy edited his Plist manually to get the 3200mhz operating speed. I may give that a shot and fill in the serial numbers while I'm at it.

**UPDATE**

Ram speed and info is fixed and the audio is sort of fixed.

After checking the Realtek 100 series audio drivers in multibeast (In addition to the one mentioned in OP) and installing, I now see audio devices.

The two audio output options that are shown in the OSX audio output devices only correlate with the center channel and subwoofer output. There seems to be no output device in the list that can send a signal to the green output jack so for now I'm using center channel audio. Not ideal but better than nothing I guess.

I went ahead and ordered the dragonfly USB audio device. It should provide better audio quality anyways.

Here's what I set for my RAM in Configurator and then saved it (plist file in EFI partition) then opened it up with a text editor and changed the 2 speed values from 2600 to 3200 rebooted and how it now shows up properly in hardware info.

Hello,
Can the h170 ssdt be used with the z170n motherboard?

I didn't use the SSDT for my Z170N board as their USB ports are different. Right now all the USB ports, except the USB 3.1 port, are working somehow using the USBInjectAll kext
Really, I thought that the USB ports were the exact same I both boards.

I've got a build going using the H170N-WIFI. Install went smooth, now I'm trying to drive my Dell U2711 with resolutions greater than 1080p. I'm attached using HDMI & don't seem to see resolutions in settings @ 2560? Do I have to change a configuration in Clover & also will I need to use the DVI cable? I know the U2711 likes to use Display port/DVI for resolutions > 1080p, just not sure how to get OSX to give me the resolution options. I'm rather new to Clover, prior I've used other boot loaders to get video setup.

There are some slight difference, at least for my Z170N Gaming 5 board compared to ammulder's H170N Wifi. I'm comparing the port number with his SSDT file. For e.g., my board's m.2 card port is at 0d while his H170N is at 08. And furthermore, Z170N Gaming 5 has a USB 3.1 port while all USB ports of H170N Wifi are USB 3.0

Are you using a separate graphic card? My monitor is a 2k monitor, and it's using a dual-dvi cable from GTX950. You might want to check which port of your monitor support resolution above 1080p (some monitors doesn't support >1080p over HDMI). The selection should be "automatic"
