Hey all,

Building a hackintosh (First time, only used a mac once, Windows fanboy here, please don't hurt me :p)

Got this for the part's list:

i3-2105 - £106.02
http://www.ebuyer.com/264714-intel-core ... 0623i32105

Gigabyte GA-Z68P-DS3 Z68 Socket 1155 - £71.99
http://www.ebuyer.com/284388-gigabyte-g ... m=products

Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB - £14.99
http://www.ebuyer.com/275161-crucial-ba ... 5664ba160a

KFA2 GT 430 1GB - £43.54
http://www.ebuyer.com/269207-kfa2-gt-43 ... ggs8hx3xfz

And I will just use a generic cheap PSU + Case bundle.

What I'd like to know is, should all this work as a hackintosh, and also, any better ways to get more for my money? The total is around £310 all in for the rig

Well, your chosen CPU has the HD3000 in-built GPU, and you have picked a Z68 mainboard, which means if you decide to use Lion, you could use the in-built graphics function and save a little bit more by not requiring a graphics card.

Bear in mind though that the only graphics output on that board is a single HDMI connector.

Also, you might like to consider an optical drive.....

:)

Well, I'm going to need a graphics card of some type, just because I'm sure any card will be quicker for video rendering (My brother wants to use it for things such as GarageBand and iMovie (I think thats right?))

As for the optical drive I have some laying around, I guess just most drives will work fine?

Will be posting up another version soon, hopefully might be cheaper for the motherboard meaning I can increase the CPU and GPU power

Have a search on the forums for the optical drive(s) you have. Some are known to work, others are known to be problematic and can cause problems with sleep etc.

The Sony Optiarcs are known to work well.

Thanks for that, seem like you can pick up different ones for cheap. I'll have to add that to my considerations, although a CD Drive wont be needed so asap if I have a USB Drive to install Lion from

New Motherboard - GA-H61M-USB3-B3, I assume this will work as a hackintosh as it is listed in the DSDT database (4 different ones). Hope this will as it's about £25 cheaper, that money can do towards a better CPU or GPU.

Now a question that I hope is totally possible, I will be needing a firewire card for the motherboard else he can't get the files onto his PC (Nevermind getting a P2 card reader, prices are amazingly high). I assume there are some firewire PCI cards that work in hackintoshes?

My friend has a Macbook who I'm sure will help me out on that front. Now the challenge is to find that card in the UK :p

are you looking for firewire 400?
if so, the belkin f5u503 can be bought cheaply in the uk

I bought my firewire card from Scan, this is the one I got :

This is the FW800 version, which I specifically wanted. Theres also a cheaper FW400 version too:

And also, an even cheaper one at just £5.15 here :

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/dynamode ... set-400mbp

That one is FW400 too but has the VIA chipset rather than the T.I chipset. It works out just under a tenner including delivery.
