I'm in the situation that I'm on a golden build running Yosemite installed using multibeast with the chameleon boot loader. I want to upgrade to El Capitan and Clover but I don't want to do a clean install of El Capitan, which will involve wiping everything on my live drive.

This creates subtle differences to the standard installation guide on here, and I keep going round and round in circles trying to work out the best order to do things. Should I move to clover first, then upgrade using the App Store? Or should I use a USB drive to upgrade to Clover and only then do the upgrade to El Capitan?

It might seem obvious to experience users, but I'm sure there are others like me who got their hackintosh running by following the (brilliant) user guides on here, but are not in the situation that they don't want to wipe their main drive through a clean install. Even just a post explaining the best practice for the dual move to Clover and to El Cap would be useful.

{I have done lots of searches and looked at lots of the install guides, but there are always complications and confusions because they weren't working with a 'golden build' - for example, do I really need to disable USB 3 in the BIOS settings, or did that only apply to that person's specific setup. You don't have to make a clean install - You don't have to wipe your hard drive.

I would always advise cloning your hard drive before a major upgrade so that you have a way back if things don't work out.

You can run Clover from a USB flash drive to test everything without affecting your current setup :

Thanks for the information and links to those articles. They helped a lot. I now have Clover tested and installed on my live system drive, with everything working. That's step one, at least. Thanks again.

Only real tip i have is if you had working imessage and stuff with a valid serial on chimera, try to use same serial on clover setup after using magic wand tool you just input the old serial from chimera manually.
using same rom and system ID also good. basically you don't want apple to randomly think you got a new mac. It should look same for purpose of keeping imessage, app store etc happy. if you keep registering new devices eventually you may have to call apple and get some removed/fixed to authorize your current setup and that can involve explaining why your account has a bunch of x mac with diff serials.

My Clover install went fine - everything working, including audio. Then I followed the instructions for removing old Chimera files - but having done that I no longer have any audio. Should I put something back? Or put it somewhere new? Or install a clover driver of some sort? These are the items I moved to a backup folder as the instructions suggested.

Audio will require you to install new. See http://www.tonymacx86.com/audio/143757-audio-realtek-alc-applehda-guide.html

In attempting to follow that audio guide, I seem to have caused all sorts of additional problems. Multibeast returned install failures. One of the audio tools listed returned info about SIP being enabled and this was causing an issue. So I tried to disable SIP using the recovery drive and the csrutil disabled command. I got a message saying this had worked but when I rebooted SIP was still enabled.

So, I did some searching and tried to add the relevant code to my config.plist:

</dict>
<key>RtVariables</key>
<dict>
<key>BooterConfig</key>
<string>0x28</string>
<key>CsrActiveConfig</key>
<string>0x3</string>
</dict>

(I found it here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/el-capitan-desktop-support/170611-explaining-os-x-el-capitan-security-changes-workarounds-current-information-6.html#post1112869)

Having done that, my mac won't reboot.
Reboot stalls with apple logo and non-moving progress bar.

It won't reboot in safe mode either, but it will reboot using ‘with injected kexts’ – either with or without cache.

I've deleted the code added from the config.plist, tried to reboot, and situation remains the same. Won't reboot normally but will reboot 'with injected kexts.'

I clearly have a lot of troubleshooting to do, but where should I start? Any suggestions welcome.

(I've attached the multibeast install log, though it simply says 'failed'

Worry not - solved my reboot problem: found a backup of the config.plist and used that the replace the other. I clearly messed something up, though I was careful honest. Good thing there was a backup lying around.

Now all I have to do is work out why multibeast can't install audio drivers. And why turning off SIP in terminal doesn't seem to work.
