Comments:

This is based off the CustoMac Build. A few noteworthy bits… I went with a Noctua cooler and I chose the low profile memory modules to accommodate its size. Also, I picked the Sonnet PCI card for FireWire functionality. I went with a PCI rather than newer PCIe to preserve a PCIe slot. It seems to work fine and includes two FW800 and a single FW400 port.

The build was easily overclocked to 4.5 GHz with a Geekbench score of 16100+.

About This Build:

What I particularly wanted to share is this series of detailed videos I put together on this build. These are geared towards Mac users who may not be familiar with such things. Hopefully this will help those looking to dip their toes into building a hackintosh for the first time. Comments and suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for a great resource here and hopefully this effort can help.

How are you liking the machine instead of your iMac? :p

Hi, I have exactly the same components as you, except the box is a 500R.
I can not run the firewire.
With the Noctua fan stays a temperature of 25 ° and want to know what values ??to change in the bios to get a bit more performance.
I have also noticed that USB stay in lighted at shutdown, you know how I can fix?

Thanks!

That temp seems fine depends on the temp delta. If you're not using voltage control, the fan should be running full all the time.

I couldn't get on-board FireWire to work, which is why I got the card. I heard some people got it working, but not sure if it's a Snow Leopard vs Lion thing.

Not sure what you mean by USB lights.

First thanks for your quick response.
What happens to me with USB is that I turn my computer if I have a USB disk connected this still works.
I have also noticed that my computer sounds much the fans ...
I was hoping that with these components sound very little ..
The firewire I mean having the MoBo itself

Thanks for yours videos

So, external drive sleep when the computer is off? Not sure how that works, actually. Does it go to sleep on a Mac? My guess would be that's specific to the drive controller more than the USB port, but donno.

The Noctua are supposedly one of the quietest fans out there. Like I mentioned in the video, that was a big reason I got the NH-D14. You could always replace the case fans. I might look into this, although I have no complaints as-is.

On the CPU cooler, you can plug them into the two CPU fan plugs and change the BIOS to regulate the fans by voltage. This will make them variable and run quieter when not under load. To me, that's a noticeable difference.

Most current Other World Computing external drives do sleep/wake-up because they've got a newer Oxford chipset. I've several of the Mercury Elite series which work with Mac sleep/wake-up; I use the FW interfaces and have not tested with USB. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MEFW934FWU2K/

BTW, OWC (macsales.com) sells excellent 3rd party Mac stuff (technical term). OWC and Smalldog (http://www.smalldog.com/) are well known to long time Mac users.

I just trying to save even more money where ever I can and I see you have used anywhere near all the optical drive bays and hard drive bays. Do reckon you could have done with the Corsair Carbide Series 300R instead of the 400R?

thanks for videos :)
